Zack White leather www.zackwhite.com He has 5 lb bundles of leather scraps that are surprisingly large and very usable. I just got some today! The Bridle/Latigo leather pack is all good (and heavy) stuff. I got a pack of "oil tanned", which was more of a mixed bag with some odd stuff, though with some work, I think I can even use most of the odd stuff. They also have packs of random Brown leather and random black leather. All less than $20 a bag.

I use Tandy Leather also, but I would just look for leather shops in your area.

The end cap is peened on, so you can grind it off, you can make another out of brass or some other decorative metal, you can pick up 8-9 oz or higher leather for washers or even pick up leather washers at Tandy Leather. or make them out of other cool textiles.
