Dermatology recommendations? I'm looking for a dermatologist as I am absolutely sick of my persistent adult acne. Any recommendations? I would probably prefer the south...

Are you sure it's adult acne that you have? I had the same problems with acne for a long time and someone came up to me (at work) and commented on my pizza face and questioned what kind of products i was using for my hair. Turns out at the time I was using Fructis and when I used a different product, I had a lot less acne. I am currently in between bottles at the moment. The best shampoos I have used are the Live Clean brand and Aveeno sulfate free. Chances are you are using a shampoo/conditioner product that has sodium laureth sulfate and your skin is just reacting to that. Maybe all you have to do is just change your brand? Other than that, there is a dermatology dept at the U of A hospital but the wait times to get in there are insane. I went there on a referral from my DR and they helped out a lot. However the referral from your Dr is needed to get in. You can reach them here: http://www.albertahealthservices.ca/services.asp?pid=saf&rid=1090322

Have you been on accutane? Antibiotics? Retinol? Unless you've exhausted all the standard acne options through your family doctor, it's really premature to assume you need to see a specialist.
Fluffynutterbutt replied:
Many dermatologists require a referral, you should talk to your family doc to get one. But you can always make suggestions, and Dr. Marlene Dytoc is quite good. She's in College Plaza by the U of A. She's very good with scar reduction, although mine wasn't from acne.

http://www.raoderm.com/ https://www.ratemds.com/doctor-ratings/39635/Dr-Jaggi-Rao-Edmonton-AB.html This guy. I have to say that this physician is really great at what he does. Went to one of his lectures on acne in adults and in the pediatric population and about rosacea. He is by far very knowledgeable on the latest treatment options and the pathophysiology of the condition. Go to your family physician, ask for a referral to this guy, stating that current treatment is not working (cause GP's will follow the guidelines such as using antibiotics, tactuo, etc..) and get this guy to look at your problems.

Try CosMedics. They are downtown. I don't believe you need a referral. I used to use their spa services (Urban Body Clinic) years ago.

Forgive me for sounding like a turd, but put down the candy bar and wash your face more..
You don't need a dermatologist. Your body is reacting to something it doesn't like. Boy I wish I knew that when I was younger.
Just kidding. I waited a whole two months to see a dermatologist here, and he was a complete dick turd.
Wasted time worrying, waiting, and so on. It will take a great GP to provide a great referral to a proper dermatologist. Canada's medical system really blows in this regard. Not like other countries where you can literally shop for the best doctor in town.
In the end, on my own, through research and observation, I found out what was causing my skin problem.
Cut the bad diet out, use suitable skin products (those women at shoppers drug Mart are probably more helpful than the dermatologist), and whatever else you need. For me it involved drinking and applying Braggs Apple cider vinegar..
Buy good bar of soap ( no chemicals, think wild prairie Or whatever), and don't use cheap chemical filled products.. cliniderm is good. you'll be alright

Dermatologist review Hello,
I have been looking for dermatologist that will provide acne scar removal, and I came across this place called "Perfection Cosmetics," 9134...

I don't know about affordability, it was about $1,500 per session (I don't have a comparison against another dermatologist). Depending on how deep your scars are you will most likely need a couple sessions. My dermatologist referred me to Dr. Jaggi Rao. He says he use to teach at the University of Alberta but it seems he just runs his private practice now. Besides the dermatologist, you need to find out the type of equipment they use, i.e. the type of laser as it affects different types of scars differently. https://www.ratemds.com/doctor-ratings/39635/Dr-Jaggi-Rao-Edmonton-AB.html

I have had alot of friends visit laser sheer for multiple skin ailments and only heard great things. I know it's located in West Edmonton Mall by golds gym. Can't comment on the pricing since I haven't personally done it.

I don't know anything about cost, but I had a recent appointment with Dr. Chris Keeling at Symmetry Dermatology and it went well. Long waiting time, however.

Almost all specialists will need a doctor's referral. You may be able to find a dermatologist via a skincare clinic, but you may end up paying out of pocket for that as well. Your best bet is probably to see another GP who is willing to refer you to a new dermatologist or an endocrinologist. Some PCN offices have specialists in-house, including endos, so maybe check around and see if you can find one. In some cases if you go in prepared and have the name of a specific doctor you want to see they'll go ahead and refer directly to them. Sidenote, a GP can refer for a thyroid blood test, unless it's a particularly complicated test that needs a specialist to interpret it, but that's rarely the case for the routine blood tests.
fegero replied:
I am currently seeing a doctor as well as an endocrinologist at the Old Scona Medical Center and have nothing but good things to say. Try see if you get get in with Dr.Shtewi there and he will most likely provide a referral.
spacegirlsally replied:
I don't see why there would be particular blood tests for thyroid that can only be requested by an endocrinologist? What specific tests are these? It sounds like it's time for a new family doctor. Also, as an aside: If your skin issues are acne/cyst related - have you tried cutting out dairy and/or sugar from your diet? https://bioeffect.co.uk/thebuzz/the-effects-of-dairy-on-skin/#

Mhca replied:
Yes, dermatologists will require a referral from a GP in my experience.
evange replied:
That's cosmetic, not medical. You need a "medi-spa" which will have a nurse and/or doctor on staff to administer cosmetic procedures. For dark spot scarring you'll likely be recommended microneedling or possibly lasers.
sinfulnature1 replied:
You bet. Go to family doctor or walk in clinic and get a referral. Cool laser treatments now but use caution with them and do a test area first. Or cover them with tattoos. I have a large surgery scar that's covered by a tat and you can only see scar if the light is at perfect angle and intensity. I have an appt in February to cover a very large burn and surgery scar so I won't know how that turns out for a couple months.
discharge replied:
Go to Acne Clinics of Edmonton. They're in West Ed. You can see a dermatologist without referral.
Sigma_Beta replied:
Those may also go away with time - mine did. It took years though. As someone else mentioned it is cosmetic so not covered by health care most likely. I don’t think you need a referral in such a case.
Canadian_Obama replied:
Honest question, have you tried bio-oil or polysporin? Post scarring of course.
grungyfox replied:
For cosmetic procedures no referral is needed. [Dr. Sharma](https://www.thesharmaclinic.com/) does great work and is highly rated.
Can anyone recommend a highly good pediatric dentist and dermatologist? Tia. :)

Dr. Jay Hambleton in Devon. My 7 yr old was scared to get his cavity fixed. When he was done he told me he didn't even need to get a needle cause Dr. Jay had magic hands. Later the nurse told me he did get a needle ! Amazing !! My son has been back since for another fix and he didn't mind a bit. We had issues with our insurance coverage and they didn't make me pay either. They were willing to wait to figure it out thank goodness because I didn't have over $400 to spend at the time.
