Marlene Rusk Temporary residency is what you get when you are initially approved (pensionado or rentista). After 3 years in this status you can then apply for permanent residency.
Marcela G. replied:
Residency process is Now taking longer than 2 years ago. Immigration is over loaded with work and average time to obtain residency-once file is complete- is 1 years. Neverthless we have received approvals in 2, 4, 6 months but average is 12 months. Immigration has Been trying to be up to date for years but they can't because the number of applicattions in the past years has increased beyond control and Immigration has the same number of employees, therefore delay is a normal consequence. I used to work for Immigration San José for years and I know their internal process, they are doing their best but still have a huge delay . An applicattion status could be "in signature" and this process can Take 4 to 8 weeks. I have Been an immigration lawyer for the past 23 years and I know the process perfectly, nobody can really guarantee that a residency process will be approved in 3 months and if they do they are "guessing"
Roland T. replied:
Marcela Gurdianhttp://immigrationexpertscr.com/costarica/ would be a great choice. They got our temporary residency in 4 months from the time we applied.

Cynthia...I am no attorney but rather a retired teacher here from Florida...and been coming here for over 20 years...My advice to you is straight and simple...do not risk playing around with Costa Rica Laws..the Nationals..always get favorable treatment in the courts here...and the can tell lies to the cows come home and make all sorts of problems...and Most of All...are you aware of the Immigration Law that requires both signatures from the parents before a child can leave the country? That is surpassed if both parents are traveling together...You can see this immigration law directly on the Migracion Dept wep pages here in CR. and there is a form there also..for the signature of the absent parent. I hope this helps..and good luck.

Do not assume that your attorney is a residency expert. The best thing to do is to check to see what it says on his business card, and if it doesn't say residences, It's better to get someone that only does residences like http://www.crimmigrationexperts.com/
