Does anyone in the group have recommendations for a good pilates gym or instructor in Eugene? I'm looking for something for a beginner.

While I second Katie and Megan (love Lifeforce), I think pilates is great, but slightly expensive. You may want to try Carpe Diem or Midtown Pilates if you're specifically looking for a pilates studio,

You could give Oakway Fitness a try. Although I haven't been there since they moved to their new-ish building. http://www.oakwayfit.com/

I belong to the Y, my husband belongs to In Shape, and we're both pretty happy with our choices. The Y has a good mix of fitness classes, yoga classes, and weights/workout equipment (and a pool which is less important to me but still a nice option to have). Assuming you're a guy, there are even some guys in the classes, if that's your thing (at least the ones I go to - strength training, R.I.P.P.E.D., yoga). And there's a sauna in the locker room, which is a huge plus for me. I went to In Shape a few times to check it out, but ultimately liked the classes at the Y better. I also found the basement at In Shape (where the weights are) to be just a touch creepy/dark.

Of you're willing to drop the money and you're looking for the absolutely nicest gym in town, it's the DAC without question. Indoor track, multiple pools, squash courts... LOTS of squash courts. Alternatively, join the rock gym. They have your standard equipment and are awesome!

I love Rena. It's in the plaza at 40 th and Donald. Body weight interval training. The instructor is amazing. Very motivating, never condescending.

I own a coaching gym in Springfield. Everyone gets an individualized program and help from a coach every time they are in the gym. And to speak to your last point, good form is imperative. If you feel like we might be a good fit, I look forward to the opportunity to help. www.cascadepeakperformance.com

I've always found gyms to be really uncomfortable and awkward places, but I joined In Shape Fitness in December and have found it really enjoyable. The cross section of people who go there is really broad (old, young, all levels of fitness), and there's no sense of it being a meat market or anything like that. The staff is also really friendly, and one of them sounds exactly like Sam Elliott, which seems like a pretty good reason to join a gym. I haven't checked out the classes and they don't have a pool, but if you just want a friendly place to come and do your thing, I highly recommend it. I think it's relatively cheap, too, though I didn't do a lot of comparing.

The gym in Creswell (Ironworx?) is the best one I found if you're looking for Olympic-style lifting. (They're the only non-Crossfit gym that has bumper weights, lifting platforms, and will let you actually control-drop weights accordingly.) Kind of a hike though if you don't want to leave Eugene proper.

I really like Anytime Fitness, 24 hrs a day. Private changing rooms complete with showers. Access to any of them in the world. And so far there are 4 or 5 in Eug-Spfd. And growing. Also a decent amount of equipment, machines, weights and satellite radio the users can control. Also a few of those locations offer classes and what not. And its $36 per month!

So this winter I am investing in a gym membership, any suggestions on solid places around the area? Also I will likely need a gym partner to keep me motivated, anyone?

Evan DeliFi I challenge you to give hot yoga a chance. Try it for one week, and attend 4-5 times minimum. I GUARANTEE you will see a boost in physical muscle mass, tone, and your endurance in using those muscles... in addition to the benefits you're talking about. I don't think you've ever done yoga, so you're relying on a lot of the yoga stereotypes. This was me as well before I tried it. I thought yoga was this mellow thing that was mainly about flexibility. And there are lots of yoga studios where that is the case. The Kundalini yoga I was doing was definitely more meditative than anything. But after giving this hot yoga a try, I can honestly say it's a full body workout that leaves me dripping in so much sweat it looks like I just jumped in a pool. It's worth also pointing out that even when I've attended non-heated beginner's classes, I am still dripping with sweat in the same way after I'm finished. The heat mainly adds to the endurance challenge of it all though in the heated classes. I'm not saying it will make you look like Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime, but it will make you look stacked. Just about everybody who is a regular there has a six pack (or more), stacked huge shoulders, biceps, triceps, legs, thighs, ass, etc.. I am positive that most (or all) of these people don't do any regular exercise outside of yoga... maybe a little cardio on the side that's it.

John Alford & Vincent Bovino I have a feeling you would know some good places
Kahn K. replied:
If you can find a place, I recommend hot yoga even moreso than a gym. I have done it all, and actually have a gym in my apartment complex that is free to use. But literally, nothing makes me sweat, builds tone/muscle, and makes me feel so good as hot yoga. I go to a chain called "Core Power" which it looks like they have a couple locations in Portland. If you're relocating, I highly advise giving it a try. They will let you try it unlimited for a week completely FREE. I did the free week thinking that would be it, and that I would never pay the monthly price they were asking. But after attending 5 times during the first week, I was hooked. I still attend 4-6 times per week three months in. It's also something that is great to take friends (and your girls) along to! http://www.corepoweryoga.com/yoga-studio

What's your budget? I've done a lot of research on this and the short answer is that there isn't a good gym in town that is cheap. If you're really on a budget, Planet Fitness in Springfield is your best bet. Most places in town are $30-50 a month and dirty and crowded. If you don't mind a bunch of students, Snap on 29th and Willamette is relatively cheap for how clean it is, but it's VERY small. The "locker room" has one shower right next to the one toilet. The Y is crazy expensive for a single adult, for what it is. Dirty and broken machines. Staff that doesn't give a fuck. Here is your best bet: fork over the dough and get a community member membership at the UO Rec Center. It's like 60 bucks or something, but you get access to clean machines, their pools, their climbing wall, and helpful staff.

Planet Fitness is having a sale right now. It ends tomorrow. A month to month membership is normally $15 per month. During the sale it's $10 per month. Also the usual initiation fee is $40. During the sale it's 25 cents. There is no commitment with this membership. You can quit anytime you wish without penalty or exit fees.

Most is important is finding one you will regularly go to. Look at the ones between your home and work.

Planet fitness is probably the best value. 24/7 decent equipment for most. But if you are in to heavy barbell work you might not like it. Other then that for most ppl it's a great place.

I tried a gym membership and it wasn’t entirely my thing. So then I tried out elevation a modern bouldering gym. I don’t really know if you would call it affordable but it’s defiantly reason prices. What I love about climbing is that it’s a work out but instead of weight lifting you can challenge yourself with climbing harder and harder routes! Also they have a small weight room. The whole area is clean and memberships come with discounts on gear and free courses

There's the River Road Park & Rec Fitness Center. Nothing fancy, but I would have considered it if I didn't already have my own home gym equipment. Prices seem pretty reasonable even if your outside of their district. [https://www.rrpark.org/fitness.shtml](https://www.rrpark.org/fitness.shtml)
