I've had several repairs done at Todd's in springfield and been happy, they've been good about working to a price point when needed as well.
Keep in mind though that if things are bent out of alignment it's very tricky to get everything straight again and even what looks like relatively minor damage can be expensive and difficult to get right.
Get a second opinion, but if they're saying it's totaled it's probably best to just take the money. You can decide to keep the car (they'll deduct it's salvage value from your payout) but you'll have to register it with a salvage title which will kill it's resale value. If you plan to drive it forever until it dies though, it's not the end of the world (assuming it can be safely repaired).
Edit: also lots of people in here are recommending mechanics. You don't need a mechanic for this, you need a body shop.

It's very common for people to be "positive" that a repair bill should be less than they've been told. It's rare for those people to be right. Insurance company is probably doing your friend a favor by totalling it. Now he gets 100% of the value (minus any deductible) to buy a car that isn't destroyed. It doesn't take much to total a car these days, and when you do, you'll almost always be better off taking the cash and getting a new car.

Wagon Works has always been good to me for a mechanic. But M&G is the usual go-to for collision assessment and repair.
I have used Sandpiper Auto in the past and been very pleased with both the customer service and the repair work. They fixed a problem for around $600 on my last Honda Accord that the dealership wanted $1500 to fix.

I know you've already got a ton of answers, but I'll toss in my recommendation for [Mitch over at Two Guys Auto](http://twoguysautorepair.net/) in Springfield. Dude is nice as hell and totally honest. Has done work for me and allowed payments, realized it was something stupid once and didn't charge at all, just a really great guy. Check him out if you can... seriously righteous guy. Edit: Mitch is a mechanic, not an auto body dude. Not sure if auto body is what you are looking for but if you have a mechanical issue, Mitch is the guy you are looking for.

Bob James auto repair if it is a domestic. They cost a bit, but know their stuff and are honest. Euro/Asia auto is fantastic if it is foreign made. They are also a bit pricey, but once again very honest. I have also heard Small World Auto is good and fair as well, but I have not had any personal experience with them.
Anyone know any Oregon Insurance groups that will give Insurance with a sr22 without a licence. I need proof of sr22 before I can reinstate my Oregon license.
