Anyone using Ace Tekk internet service in the neighborhood? We now have ACS and are having issues with them. Also, with ACS and GCI now merged, has service from GCI...
Mike B. replied:
The merger/sell off only involved their cellular service, not their DSL or cable modem Internet services. GCI brought new service to Chena Ridge, Chena Pump, and Cripple Creek areas last summer - it's worth a call to them to see if you can get their service.

Although for a couple days this week my internet was down the new GCI service has been good. I have phone, Internet and (for the first time in 20 some years) TV service. I don't really know what to do with all that TV but for now I can watch and record all the olympics I want. There are just Internet and phone options also. I am happy GCI came to the neighborhood.

The trick with all this is whether or not your preferred service provider can actually provide service at your place. We had 320kbps service with ACS for 15 years. Then last summer GCI plumbed the neighborhood with fiber, so we went with their RED service (highest at the time was 250Mbps!), with the guarantee that whatever their equipment was able to handle as upgrades were performed, that we would get the maximum available for no additional charge. A few ***days*** after they initially installed the 250Mbps, it was automatically bumped to 500Mbps last October. In May this year, they bumped it again to 1Gbps (1000Mbps) - again, no change in monthly charges or upgrade fees. Needless to say it's plenty:)
Moving into a house in a remote area of North Pole that does not offer cable internet. The current owner uses Verizon. The area also has AT&T service. Some of the...

Just got off the phone with AT&T. He quoted the Mifi service at $65/mo for the unlimited plan. That's 22Gigs at full speed, then throttled to 6 mb/s for the remainder of the month. You also have to rent the hotspot which has a $0.99 or $50 option. Not sure of the pros and cons of each device. Research is still in progress. EDIT: VZW just said their "unlimited" is 10 gigs at full, then 3 g speeds. That plan is $80/month.

AC wireless is about your only option for the kind of internet you're used to. It is unlimited, and at 4 mb, will give you a solid, single, Netflix session. Satellite IMHO is only for if you can't get anything else. With its small usage cap, your family will either be constantly paying overage fees or in the penalty box, or frustrated. Streaming audio or video will use up your data allowance unbelievably fast.
For those of you in Fairbanks who might hold a telecommuting position and work from home, which internet service do you recommend? I work remotely and will be moving to...

GCI Red is now unlimited. Even so, and even with TV and tablets streaming I never came close to the cap. I simply don't stream in 1080.
George H. replied:
I'll second what Lauren Fisch Cerny wrote. I tried ACS and it was too slow even though I was getting excellent speed. I do a lot of my work from home through a VPN. GCI Red has been excellent though very expensive. I live in town so I have a few options. Second to that I have a Verizon Jetpack for work in the field which I use every day, I have excellent service in my work area which is North Pole and Fairbanks. Best to check with GCI before you move in. I hope this is helpful.
