Veterinarian recommendations in Fairfax? My wife and I are looking to rescue a dog here in the next month or so and are wondering if /r/nova has any recommendations for...
detrickm replied:
I've been happy with [Centreville Animal Hospital](http://www.centrevilleanimalhospital.com/). Friendly, easy to work with, and seem to know their stuff. When I took my dog in with a lame leg they suspected he had a torn CCL and sent me out rather than treating it inhouse. For me, that says something. They could have tried to treat it there if they wanted to, but they were more interested in having the dog seen by someone who was an expert in dealing with that type of injury.

If you don't mind a drive to Herndon, you should go to the Clock Tower vet clinic. My vet is Dr.Mazur, and he's awesome
gibuthegreat replied:
Thank you all very much for your feedback. Good to know that there are a number of vets in the area with satisfied customers. I've got some homework to do!
oyesannetellme replied:
We initially went to Commonwealth in Fairfax city, but switched to Pender in fair oaks. I much prefer Pender for routine visits... the techs are pretty good (a little pokey), but good.
Orbiter9 replied:
We've been happy with Animal Lovers in ffx city. The vet practices eastern and western medicine together, has cut us some good deals as return customers, and making appointments/tracking things with their online portal is really easy. We have used Pender in fair oaks for emergencies. Side note: we also have insurance through Pets Best. That's been really nice - it covers routine procedures as well as emergencies.
tnguo replied:
Late, but am recommending Caring Hands Animal Hospital. They have several locations but I have experience with the Centreville location. I've worked as a vet assistant there as well as Pender and feel absolutely comfortable talking my animals in to Caring Hands. It's hard as a pet owner to know if your animals are being treated well, especially if they are taken away from you for procedures in the back, but having worked with staff and knowing the owner and hospital philosophy, I'm relieved to have found a place I can trust. The owner, Dr. Vitulli, genuinely cares for both the owners and the animals, and it's reflected in the doctors and staff she hires.

We love the team at Hollin Hall Animal Hospital, and sing their praises. http://www.hollinhallanimalhospital.com/

[Southpaws](http://www.vcaspecialtyvets.com/southpaws), hands (paws?) down. They are wonderful.
SrSkippy replied:
I've had good experiences with Pender. People say they are expensive, but i don't think so. They've got an emergency department that does not charge for phone calls like some do. I've had my cat there for surgery as well.
37b replied:
Not only is Dr. Knode a great vet with reasonable pricing, she comes to YOU. Check out HousePaws.
dorkwithafork replied:
We've been going to Oakton-Vienna Veterinary Hospital since the 1990 s. Dr. Sandy Christmus especially is wonderful, but all the vets there are great. Experienced, personal care.
oneelectricsheep replied:
Aldie Veterinary Hospital is a good vet if you don't mind a drive. Full disclaimer I did work there not long ago however having said that they're also where I'd bring my animals if I still lived in the area. Their staff is really well educated and the vets are top notch. I think they also have a really well reasoned approach to preventative medicine. They also have a decent online presence so you can get their vaccine history without having to call or drop by and you can schedule appointments online as well. If your dog does get sick or hurt they are able to do a lot of stuff in the clinic that you ordinarily wouldn't find outside a specialist or emergency clinic. They have a free emergency line you can call for advice after hours and they even have a vet that does holistic medicine if that's what floats your boat. www.aldievet.com
Wisix replied:
I've been going to [Sully Animal Hospital](http://www.sullyanimalhospital.com/) in Centreville since I adopted my dog. They've been ridiculously helpful and kind. They have a few vets there now, but we usually see Dr. Taddeo, who owns it. They've fit us in last-minute if we had an emergency (and they were open). They try to only do what's necessary and within their ability to do. For example, when we just went in for my dog's shots, they took her back and gave her the shots, so we wouldn't be charged the full exam charge as well. They are also reasonably priced, at least comparing it to the vet my parents go to in NY.

Burke Animal Clinic on Lee Chapel Road. I drive a ways to get to this one, I really like the doctors.

My roommate takes his 2 English Bulldogs to [Town and Country Animal Hosptial](http://www.townandcountryanimalh.com/) in Fairfax City. They are very good, and have a very nice facility.
Affordable Vet in the NOVA area? So I've used Jermantown Animal Hospital in the past, but I feel like the vet there really tries to oversell and rack up charges. That's...
the__itis replied:
As a breeder and trainer, the best, most inexpensive and full service vet in the area is Blue Ridge Vet in Purcellville. Do not go to any vet in fairfax or Arlington county unless you want to be gouged. I've been living in this area since 94 and have been a pet owner the whole time. I breed and my neighbor runs a large scale rescue. We both go to Blue Ridge.
taykayzoe replied:
It's not a replacement for regular check ups, but we use [http://www.vetcoclinics.com/](http://www.vetcoclinics.com/) at PetCo for vaccinations and heartworm preventative. It sounds sketchy (the whole "take your dog into the white van to get shots" thing) but they're legit veterinarians and only charge for the materials, not the labor. For example, a rabies shot is $19. We already go to the vet at least once a year because of random freakouts ("what is that lump???") so this saves us hundreds of dollars a year.

I love all the Drs at Colonial Animal Hospital, they take such good care of my little girl :-) Also they just opened a new vet in Shirlington, haven't been there before but seen pictures it looks nice inside!

I've gotten nothing but excellent service from the Clifton-Centreville Animal Clinic in Centreville. Dr. Netscert is a good man.

Sunshine animal hospital in Annandale is affordable and the vet there is very nice. He presents you with options and doesn't try to upsell anything.

What's wrong with Banfield pet hospital at Petsmart?
Big_Suze replied:
I drive down the Woodbridge Animal Hospital since it is cheaper than than all the vets in Arlington. I also like that it is 24 hours and open for emergencies. I've read some bad reviews, but I have had all good experiences with them and thought the prices were good. They always went over different options for treatment with me, including costs of each and gave me the option of which course to take.
caryb replied:
I took my cat to the VCA in Alexandria (near the Range Rover dealership), and they have a free first exam offer. Just present the coupon, and you're good to go. We saw Dr. Chiang and she was super sweet.
Orbiter9 replied:
We've used [Pet Lovers](http://www.petloversvet.com) for our pug over the past four years. The prices seem reasonable for Fairfax - they'll also do a $99/yr thing where any visit is then "free." They've often thrown in a free service or reduced a charge here and there just because we're "regulars." They might suggest services but they've never been pushy about it.
acidarms replied:
If you are in the Sterling area, I would suggest Animal Medical Center of Cascades. I do work there, however we keep our prices in check with the other clinics around us. I absolutely love working as a vet tech there. If you want come on by and say hello! I can give you a tour too! :)
flyinhyphy replied:
Hybla Valley Vet in Alexandria (Groveton) is very affordable (http://www.hyblavalleyvet.com/). It doesn't have the nicest facilities, but the prices are fair and the vets are great. They have a good automatic discount for multiple pets (some places you have to ask for it) and a lot of times, they do not charge a visit fee for follow-ups. With our discounts it is cheaper to buy meds through them than any online/discount stores. For instance, our ~16 Frontline applications for our dogs was almost $20 cheaper than Petmeds or Costco.
Another good one is: http://www.lastchanceanimalrescue.org/wellness.html. We adopted a kitten through them and the prices are pretty unbeatable, but I've never been there.

We really liked Caring Hands Animal Hospital, and my wife is a previous vet tech - she approved. For major things, Southpaws is amazing, but pricey.

I take my dog to Sully Animal Hospital, right off Stone Rd and 28 in Centreville. They're comparatively new to other local vets, but they've been more affordable than expected and overall really good.
jlynnbizatch replied:
I use VCA in Herndon and especially love Dr. Toscana. She's warm, friendly and great with our dog. As a bonus, she's a younger doctor and definitely understands that people have budgets. She's really good about telling us what we REALLY need versus what would be nice but isn't super necessary.

Was using Woodbridge animal hospital for years until we adopted a cat and the shelter had her spayed at River Oaks Vet Clinic (near the NOVA Campus in Woodbridge) We decided to switch and try them and they have been AWESOME so far. They offer vaccine clinics too so if you have a couple animals (like I do) then it wont cost a fortune to get them vaccinated
Can anyone recommend a good dog vet that specializes in optometry?

Heard good things about Belle Haven Vet, just south of Old Town. We use Hybla Valley Vet near Mount Vernon.
Cindi P. replied:
I use Dr. Suzy Cooke ( www.vetwagon.com ). She is a mobile vet. My seniors love her. (which is highly unusual for any vet).

My wife, her mom, and her grandma have been going to see Dr. Hall and his son (Dr. Hall as well obviously) at Town and Country Animal Hospital for literally 3 generations. My wife's friends also have used both of them for generations. Dr. Hall Jr.s first patient out of vet school was my wife's childhood Doberman pincher, who had cut himself and almost bled out after being left alone at home while everyone was at work/school. Dr. Hall literally slept in the kennel with the dog for 2 nights he was so scared he was going to lose him. Great guy, great vet, I know he has personally kept my wife's friends and families pets alive in other situations.
Making_stuff replied:
For those that are OK with a bit of a drive, [Anicira](http://manassas.anicira.org/) in Manassas WAY undercuts a ton of the ridiculously expensive Fairfax vets. I used to do our dogs' basic shots at Clocktower in Herndon until Anicira undercut them by like $200 for a basic re-up of all shots for our 3 x dogs.
adrun replied:
I really like Fairfax Animal Hospital. They're one of the vets my rescue uses regularly and I've been taking my beast there since Ballston raised their rates ridiculously. Fairfax is near Bailey's Crossroads and is a little off the beaten path, which makes me way more comfortable than some of the vets that are on big heavily trafficked roads.

Pet Lovers' Vet in Fairfax by Petco and Tango Vet in the shopping center where Chuy's is are both small practices and the doctors are really nice.

What type of animal do you have? I've read a lot of good things about several of the recommended vets on here, and while I'm certain they're wonderful for dogs and cats, SEAVS is your best bet for exotics.

We have been going to Towne and country. The staff is super friendly, and easy to contact. They even have a companion app so you can reach out for a contact or look up medical files on your pet. In fact we had just had labs done on one of our beagles and they called us the next day with results. They didn't subscribe to the "no news is good news" philosophy. They actually let us know that his labs came back clear as soon as they knew.

Companion Animal Clinic in Burke. We've been going there since we adopted our pup, and they have been nothing short of great. Plus it's not very far from Fairfax (right off 123) near the interchange with FFX county parkway.
Vet recommendations I have a 9-week old kitten who needs his shots. I'm in the Fairfax city area. I know PetCo does a bi-weekly clinic but I need it to be done this...
caryb replied:
Check out [VCA Alexandria](https://vcahospitals.com/alexandria/contact-us) -- they have a free first visit and we love the vet we see (Dr. Chang). They have appointments that you can make for things like shots and whatnot, and also are open 24 hours for emergencies. :) We've only done the after-hours visit once, and maybe waited 20 or 25 minutes.

The Burke Petco is having their clinic on Thursday and Sunday this week, that's probably going to be your most cost effective option. Thursday hours are 6:00 pm-7:30 pm, and Sunday hours are 2:00 pm-3:30 pm. Their phone number is 703-455-2007, I'm not sure if you need to sign up in advance.

Dr. Norman Lohr in Bakersfield, CA is simply the most loving Avian vet ever! He's taken care of all my birds, cats, dogs and rabbits! He rocks!!!

Did an online search for avian certified vets. He was one of a few in the state and closer to us. Our first vet was too far away and our goffin had blood feather plucking issues that required a knowledgeable vet closer. People from Oregon bring their birds to Dr Onorati in Washington State.
