I think the theory behind the heat, is that heat makes the molecules in metal move...it might be enough "movement" to loosen whatever is making it adhere to the counter. I would try a very thin paint scraper wedged underneath the area that is stuck to the counter. Also, try a pair of needle nose pliers into the screw hole. As the pliers expand, you may get enough tension to pull them up. I bet Keith Boisvert could help.
