Can't help you on the restaurant, but FUCKING GOOD ON YA for doing it in public, as well to say I hope SSM is legalized here sooner rather than later.

Not sure about in the CBD but I've heard good things about Shakahari in Carlton.

Have you considered Lentil as Anything in abbotsford convent? It's a really amazing spot and a short walk down a lawn leads to a pagoda there. Beautiful place. *edit* just read another post in this subreddit about an event happening on Wednesday so that might be worth checking out?

If you want cheap/casual then Vege Bar is a good bet, if you want something with better food and more towards fine dining atmosphere, then Shakahari Vegetarian Restaurant has fantastic food. Any of the lentil as anythings are another solid choice - casual and pay what you want. Basically anything that doesn't have "steak" in the name within the CBD and surrounding suburbs is going to be able to provide good vego food to vegetarians and be open minded. Shakahari would be my pick though.

I recommend smith and daughters in fitzroy. Great food and great atmosphere, and definitely open. Just make sure to book a private table ahead or you will be on the communal table. But they are as bohemian as it gets for a nicer restaurant, so it would suit.

I'm waiting for that guy to come and suggest Squire's Loft again.

Well there is Vegebar in Fitzroy - it's rather hustly and bustly though - I assume you want something a little quieter? Long grain is always good and they have lots of veggie options, Or Red Spice Road... the more I think about this, the more I realise just how much my fave CBD places are meat heavy :(

Smith and Daughters for sure. Not fine dining but perfect for everything else you're after IMO

[Maha](https://maharestaurant.com.au/) is fantastic. Their veg food is a cut above anything else I've eaten (boyfriend says the same about the non-veg meals). Atmosphere and service staff are awesome. It's a bit pricey but totally worth it. Great special occasion restaurant.

I hear Attica does an amazing vegetarian degustation, if that's within your budget. Edit: it's not in the CBD, but not too far from there (Ripponlea)

I'd say either [Crossways](http://www.crosswaysfoodforlife.com.au) on Swanson Street in the CBD or [Lentil As Anything](http://abbotsfordconvent.com.au/eat-drink-shop/eat-drink/lentil-as-anything) at the Abbotsford Convent. They both have lovely mellow, alternative atmospheres *and* they're both hella cheap (a priority if you're a bit of a miser like me, haha). Crossways is pretty humble. Abbotsford Convent is fucking beautiful. Vegie Bar in Fitzroy is pretty amazing too (very fine vego cuisine) but then again they are super busy, all the time. It would probably be hard to find the space to get down on one knee in that restaurant, and even then you'd have to really shout to be heard over the usual packed crowd of diners.

Factory cafe on Victoria St in Brunswick west is always pretty quiet and the folks there are nice....?

Just drove past Red Scooter 140 Barkly St Brunswick. This could also be another option if they do not get busy...
