Ok so I have a 5 y/o OTTB he has been off the track for 10 months. A friend of mine said he might be out of alignment and to get a chiropractor out. But the owner of the...

Whitney, he seems to canter well on his own when turned out. I know my riding is not the greats lol I havent cantered in a very long time! I am kind of getting lessons here is a video of him running around outside http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A50 mQnjijhE
Sybil M. replied:
if he canters and moves well without the saddle and rider, then look at the saddle fit! the gait to evaluate for body issues is the walk, though, not the trot or canter. at least at first. if they have issues, once they go into trot or canter, they can compensate and mask problems. if they are loose and supple at the walk, then check the trot, then canter. both directions. and note the horse's attitude -- is he happy, tuned in and listening? or ears back, hollow and uncomfortable? just spent a day with Jochen Schleese on this, and you would be amazed at how well the demo horse did on the lunge w/o tack, how poorly he did with saddle #1, and how well he did with the fitted saddle (same excellent rider). it was obvious, and both saddles looked "ok." if the saddle is not right, the work done by the chiro will be wasted. go to the http://www.saddlefit4 life.com/ website, several free videos there, and also this book is really helpful in designing a conditioning program. http://www.amazon.com/Equine-Fitness-Program-Exercises-Routines/dp/1603424636/ref=pd_sim_b_4 also check out this site -- http://hippohorses.com/

Renee Tucker is one of the chiropractors that I personally use for my horses (she recently moved to my area). I think her website might help you start to piece together behaviors with possible causes.

Eileen Keller, not all horses will flinch when they are out. Mine doesn't always. I can just tell when he needs to be adjusted based on how he is going. It can be fairly subtle. He is definitely not subtle about telling me when a rib is out, however. That message comes through, clear as can be!
I'm a Chiropractor and can answer questions you might have. My recommendation is to find someone from the AVCA website (American Veterinary Chiropractic Association)- they all go through intensive training (both chiros and vets) to be able to adjust animals. Good luck!

Katie - I would check with your vet. If he doesn't do it, he could recommend someone. I know we use Dr. Scott Anderson with Woodside Equine in Ashland, VA and have been for over 20 years for everything.
Deborah G. replied:
I had reservations but it helps and like Melissa said can make a horse sound. There is a man form AZ that goes around the US, I think the name of his practice is Animal Crackers, he is very good.
