I am not a vet, however if you are planning on keeping this dog, you can treat heartworm by giving the Heartguard every month. It will prevent new larva for more worms to develop and eventually the worms will die off. Long term, it is safer for the dog but much longer period before they rid them all (up to two years). This should be monitored by the vet since they can develop heart problems while the worms are still there and/or dying off. I do have another vet for you to use, I would advise you see Dr. John Hermann. He is a mobile clinic, but very affordable. He does do heartworm treatment with the injections for the fast kill and I think the cost is $600.00 for three injections. He does pretreatment of doxy first (antibiotic) which that cost should be under $20.00 plus exam fee of $18.00. We currently do not have additional funds to provide assistance with the cost of treatment for heartworm at this time. However, if you visit Dr. Hermann and he okays the slow treatment of the heartguard monthly, that should be affordable to you. The office exam is $18.00 to have him see your dog. Bring your current vetting information with you so he can see the test results and what has been done or hasn't. The cost of heartguard depends on the size of the dog. However, the more you purchase the cheaper the cost of it. Example: 50-100 lb dog is $48.00 for six month supply. However a years worth is around $75.00 plus a $12.00 mail-in rebate. I have heard Costco has the cheapest price on heartguard, however no mail in rebate. With the mail in rebate the cost is about the same as Costco. Dr. Hermann is mobile so he is at different clinics each day. I will attach his website with where he is and the locations. He charges $18.00 for the dogs DHLPP (Distemper) and $14.00 for a one year rabies. The dog should not get a 3 year rabies if you do not have a record of when he received his last vaccine for it. If you do not have a history of vaccines, the dog should get a booster vaccine of the DHLPP in 2 to 4 weeks after it receives the first round of vaccinations. If the dog is a small breed, they should not receive the Lepto vaccine in the DHLPP. They can have bad reactions to it. http://www.mobilevetclinic.biz/Schedule/

If Dr. Hermann states you cannot do the slow treatment and injections are necessary. Please come back and talk to us. We may be able to start a chip-in to help you raise the funds you need. Our phone number is 734-237-1812. If we are not in the office when you call, please leave a message and we will call you back. We are on the road often so we are not always here to answer the phones.

Ugh....Huron Township is much further away then I thought. I am not familiar with any vets in that area. However, speak to some vets in your area about the slow kill treatment. Some vets do not use it, however it is a very affective and affordable way to treat. Dr. Hermann still may be worth the drive if it is only one tank of gas verses the cost of other vets. That would be up to you though.
