Anyone know how to enroll a three year old in preschool at moonlight or any elementary school here in town?? First child so not sure on what to do, and not sure when...
Katie W. replied:
you can't enroll in preschool. First you need to call 913-856-2080 (the district number for Early Childhood/Special Ed) for more information for the next school year (2015-2016) but it goes on a lottery system. for the 2014-2015 school year, the lottery was already completed in June. Children with an IEP are automatically enrolled when they register and the rest of the class is made up of Peer Models, and space is very limited and your chances of being selected is very slim based on the high number of applicants. Your best bet is to go through JCPRD which has classrooms in Moonlight and Madison, or try one of the other local centers.

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has a child with autism. My son is 2 and I'm looking for a preschool for autism. I'm at a loss of where he should go. I want him to have...
Jennifer S. replied:
Hi Stephanie, first of all welcome to the family of all of us with loved ones with autism. I am a parent of now 2 grown adults with autism that both started in the school district at age 3, and now my daughter is 23 and my son soon to be 22. He has a paid job at Walgreens here in Gardner and my daughter goes to Johnson Co Community College and has created her own business with her drawings. So I want you to know there is a future and there is hope!! Gardner has wonderful autism programs in the district, I would suggest you look at infant toddler and then start communication about the Early Childhood programs. I also suggest you contact the Autism Society the Heartland, 913-706-0042, or info@asaheartland.org and also look at the website www.asaheartland.org for many resources and you can talk with someone about supports. I used to be the Ex Dir there. There is also the resource page on that website that has many services listed that you can contact that will be good for your family. You might want to make sure with your insurance company what is covered. Many will cover speech and OT, which are very very important and it may cover, ABA, applied behavior analysis therapy. If ABA is not covered it will be costly out of pocket, but that is something that can be discussed later. There is also a film that won an Emmy called Just Like You Autism www.justlikeyou-autism.org that the Autism Society the Heartland co produced which I think will help explain some things and also give you some understanding. Once again, there are supports and resources to help your child and your family. Your doing a great thing reaching out for resources and help, and we are all here for you!

Our son was just diagnosed a few month ago so I completely understand how you feel. Our son is 3 and we have him in early education classes with the school district. Infant toddler services is free and they are a great place for resources as well. Once he is 3 he will age out of infant toddler but they help get the process started for him to get help through the school district. Also, there is this place in Lenexa called Autism from the start, they are amazing. Our son went there once a week for a 90 min playgroup and really did great. They provide ABA therapy and have peer models.
