Sounds like John Budd has too much on his hearth.
Michael S. replied:
We use Piedmont Chimney Service which is apparently a group of local firefighters. We work with Carlos directly at 336-382-4434. He should know who we are. Good dude.
Jimmy T. replied:
Jon Bud: the chimney sweep. He's listed... We've used him a few times and he's great. Plus he was a friend of my Dad's
Frank B. replied:
John Budd---But you need to get him in the summer.
Brian M. replied:
I'll second Mr. Budd. Ph 336.282-1150. One caveat, he likes to walk around your entire house, in a nosy way, but he's not sketchy.

Everything I hear about John Budd is good but I've left messages since Monday with no call back. And nobody lingers around here with Stella, my chihuahua, on their heels. She has already run off a plumber this morning.

Kathy C. replied:
Weird. I just watched a trailer for the new movie Saving Mr. Banks which is about Walt Disney and P.L. Travers' collaboration on the making of Mary Poppins. Not useful info. Just makes me think I should see the movie despite my reservations.
Jamy G. replied:
We used John Budd. http://www.johnbuddschimneyservice.com/
Mary H. replied:
We love John Budd.
Mary H. replied:
Stephen, he left us a hidden chimney sweep miniature, which our dog promptly swallowed. Chimney cleaning relatively inexpensive, vet visit, not so much. (Beware Stella.) The John Budd hot sauce almost made up for it.
Okay, I need someone that is familiar with fireplaces to help me out. The last time I hired a chimney sweep/inspector, it was reasonably priced. Apparently that went out...
Looking for someone qualified and reasonable that inspects and cleans chimneys. I had a bit of a bad experience years ago with a company, so I would appreciate good...
Tina W. replied:
John Budd's Chimney Service(336) 282-1150. Been in the business forever and well respected. Done quite a few chimneys at different houses for me and not someone who will say you need stuff done to pad the bill.
Chuck S. replied:

I think Wrenn Home Improvements cleans chimneys? Jeremy B. Wrenn?
Mark M. replied:
Try Carolina Chimney and Steve Sterling - he just north of DT WFst.
John Budd336-282-1150 cleaned ours last year! Did a great job! Kids watched in amusement as put on his spacesuit, climbed in and he gasped and pulled out two candy canes he "found" that Santa had left up there. Nice guy, great work and very reasonable!
Chimney Sweep Recommendation? Has anyone used a chimney sweep in the area for inspection's and sweeping? I just moved into a townhome and am unsure of the last time the...

Assuming you're living in a rental as a student? If so, I would recommend talking to your landlord first, before doing anything. It's more of a property upkeep issue than normal wear and tear like carpet cleaning, so it's more in their interest to take care of it. They also should have and keep records of the maintenance and upkeep. It's possible that they have it done every so often to prevent the fire hazards (a fire from an uncleaned chimney would be their negligence, not yours as a tenant), so may have completed the maintenance before you moved in.

Smoke alert is half the cost of budd. Plus they do an inspection of your house also. They'll try to sell you a smoke detector and fire extinguisher, just say no. They did my house, great job. I'd have them back. I have a fireplace insert and it was only 150$
Reyali replied:
I'd second checking with your landlord if you're renting. But failing that, my boyfriend just booked someone from Angie's List for $150. They're coming out Thursday and I'll update you if they're any good!

You could try a creosol log. It is made to help break up smut on the inside of the chimney. In the event your chimney burns with will make a jet whooshing noise as it draws air into the fireplace. Just close the air intake to the fire place and the fire will die after 5-10 minutes.
Need to have gas logs serviced ASAP...any rec's for reputable, reasonable chimney sweeps/gas log servicing folks?? Trying to avoid replacing furnace this year
