A friend wants to make a convertible dress (i.e. day dress that converts to an evening gown) and I'd like to give her pattern suggestions. She has a seamstress who is...

If I'm not mistaken, you don't need a berthe for a square necked dress. Look at this painting - she just has a simple black velvet or silk stripe around the collar. http://www.pinterest.com/pin/57843176436410048/

Debra DiFranco ~ excellent tutorial (ranting perfectly logical and frank too). Thanks for the insight!

OK, to start with, here's my Pinterest board on convertible dresses. As you will see, there are several ways to do it. One way is to make a low-cut bodice and use a pelerine (button-up overlay) to change the look. Another way is to have a low-cut bodice and use a chemisette to close up the neck for day wear, adding some pagoda sleeves under the short sleeves. http://www.pinterest.com/hezpetunia/civil-war-convertible-dresses/

Here is the link and the pattern is called Leigh.... It was supposed to be from an original. http://www.harriets.com/Ballgowns.htm

Here is another link up at a public site..... Yes it is a bit ranty, but there is a useful tutorial in there for those who need to know what to look out for https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.613496758696619.1073741829.359099654136332&type=3&uploaded=20

I can't help myself I have to say something... Jenna Baumgartle has a very valid point. I had to fix too many dresses by "dressmakers" who were not trained in 19 th century techniques to the point where I now say, if I didn't make it I won't alter/fix it! Do it right not do it over! Here is a Graphic pictorial of what a woman did to a 19 th century dress and what I discovered when I had to remodel it.... and worse yet this person was not just a modern dressmaker, she was actually in the business (but out now) of selling so called historic dresses to people...... https://www.facebook.com/debra.difranco.3/media_set?set=a.363175137037026.84262.100000336287982&type=3 SORRY TO THE WORDING, IT IS WHAT THE ALBUM WAS CALLED... I WILL SEE IF I CAN EDIT IT SO IT IS USER FRIENDLY TO THE CLOSET GROUP BUT BELIEVE ME I WAS PRETTY ANGRY WHEN I PUT THIS PORTFOLIO TOGETHER. THAT IS MY DISCLAIMER.

The lady who did mine has a shop on Reidville Rd. in Spartanburg called Golden Needle. I had an all lace and beaded bodice Maggie Sottero and you can't even tell it was altered! Only charged $85 (but I paid her $100, because that was ridiculously underpriced for the work she did). She did my sister's dress last year too!
Weird request, but my sister(in law) bought this wonderful fabric that looks just like my style and I'm in need of someone who can take it and make a fireplace pillow...

Well, we have an excellent one in Moore. Her name is Mildred Alverson. She is very inexpensive, quick and very good. Let me know and I'll give you her number.
Kathleen has had her Cotillion and Wedding dress altered at Sew Fine on Boulevard. We were happy with the work and the service. She seems to be fairly busy, if that says anything.

Does anyone know of a good seamstress in the Greenville area?

The Golden Needle is good. I got 2 bridesmaids dresses taken up there as well as my sister in law got her wedding dress taken up there. Very reasonable on price and quick turn around.
