I've moved to Hawaii three time in our military life, and have put pets through Hawaii quarantine twice. (I've put pets through Guam Quarantine two more times... I like to think I'm pretty good at getting pets across the Pacific & through quarantine.) I have some info about quarantine, and other useful things about moving OCONUS in an online folder. Here is the link: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B98 jiXQpgPGCMDE4NmU0NGEtMTYyNy00MTRiLWFiMDEtNWU1MWQ1ZmM4ZTgx&usp=sharing Hopefully you will find something useful in there. I think for a first move OCONUS my OCONUS packing list for Unaccompanied Baggage & Suitcases might be the most useful. It's a work in progress so please message me with any updates, corrections or ideas you might have to make the folder even more useful.

We are going to Hickam in June. Here is what I have learned. Call your local base veterinarian to help you with the rabies quarantine process, they may be able to get you in their clinic, or will recommend going to a civilian vet. If you start early enough the only pain of it is the cost and taking the time to make sure all the paperwork is done. Start with this site to find all the paperwork, http://hdoa.hawaii.gov/ai/aqs/ If you start early enough, the cost is $165 to Dept of Agriculture, plus the fee to your veterinarian for sending off rabies test (mine was $312), then research with the airlines about shipping a giant breed. You will likely have to drive to a major hub with a direct flight. We are driving from Alabama to San Diego, CA to get a direct flight and to cut down on the cost of shipping our car. Once you have found the airline/airport that seems the best fit, take that information to the travel office on base for booking your flight over so you can go on the same flight as your dog. Going in October should be a little easier since heat and cold shouldn't be an issue. I found that all the major airlines have a pet shipping program. Since you are on orders, you have a little priority, but you will have to book your dog in advance. Cost for airline may be similar to a ticket. Good luck!

www.islandpetmovers.com can help you with your dog. It is not as hard as everyone says it is. Living on Hickam is great and the housing wait list there is not nearly as bad as for the navy side.

We used Matson 2 x to Maui from LA. Dependable Hawaiian Express for pallets.

I used Young Brothers, and honestly don't have a single complaint except that who ever drove my car off the boat was a heavy smoker, so my car stunk for a bit. Two years ago it was a flat $1075 from Seattle to Kahului. What you are going to want to check for is whether your car will be in a closed container or out on the open deck. You don't want your car on the deck of a boat for 3 weeks subject to ocean air and water.

+1 (786) 395-7991 is his company cell number. The agents name was gets on and he was wonderful. For Seattle to Maui was $925.00

Conor S. replied:
Alternate AriAll sorts of confusion going on here: first off, I doubt there is a probiotic supplement in the world that contains lactose ... Suzanne Perreault was kinda right in looking at kefir (not kefer!); average CFU score in fact is 1-3 Billion per ml!! That's 5-15 per TEAspoon ... There are no probiotics remotely comparable to kefir to date. Human health is characterised by the DIVERSITY of gut flora species. A majority of the species in kefir and fundamental in gut health are just not commercially extractable; supps just provide those couple of species that can be removed and freeze dried at a low cost. Finally Ari, with respect, your comments about the "sugar" in kefir supporting Candia growth is total rubbish. If by sugar you are referring to lactose, it's worth noting that lactose is the food for the bacteria in kefir such that, if properly made, none is left once fermentation has occured. Next, even if there were traces, kefir naturally produces multiple lactases which will more than adqueately deal with the remainder; and finally, there is no better low cost natural *treatment* for candida than use of kefir. In addition to the multiple bacterial strains, a further advantage of kefir is that it also has beneficial yeast strains which serve to crowd out nasty yeasts like nothing else. In short, if you know your probiotics, you'll know it's kefir all the way ...
