Usually data recovery companies are expensive, I've heard of a method involving freezing the drive, which can get it to work again.

Do you have any experience with computers? You can try to plug your broken "non-bootable" drive into a computer that works fine, and try to copy your data off. Most hard drive "crashes" only screw with information in the boot sector, your other data could be fine.

Working IT at UTMB we usually refer users to [Omni Data Systems](http://www.omnidatasys.net/). They are good about recovering data for users with failed drives that we do not have the resources to recover.
