About 5 months ago I rescued a 15yr old TWH Mare from a meat auction. I knew nothing about her or the breed, her situation and her eyes broke my heart and I had room...

Another thought www.smartpak.com has a great monthly supplement of vitamins to calm down a nervous horse . call them 1888 677 3411 to talk about your horse and they will ship you samples . If in 2 mo . it has not worked they will refund all . My horse does not need grain, just hay . I can use smartpacks for any special needs of a horse at what I would normally spend on grain .

Lee Zieglers Easy Gaited Horses is the best book on the gaited breeds IMO. You can also access many of her articles and Liz Graves at www.lizgraves.com These two ladies are the pioneers of accurate gaited horse information and humane training. Liz knows her stuff and does video analysis as well.

You first need to figure out if the horse is prone to rack or do what is called TN walking gait. If she is trying to rack, then you will want to just improve on that, if she is doing the true flat walk and running walk then you want to improve on that. Now since her tail has been cut then yes, at one time she was at least prepared to be a show horse. And yes these horses many times are held with tight right reins, if you throw the reins away most likely she will stop and as stated before, will most likely go faster. Now if she was ever used for trails, and i am not sure she was, then many people that just simply love to gait, do not teach a horse the basics they should, such as stand to mount and actually walk as many just want to gait, so then that is all the horse will know to do and since so many people do not understand gaits and what they are or the difference between them or how to even ride a gaited horse, then many times they do mess up their true gait. If i could see a video of her moving, i could tell you most likely what she is prone to do. Now to retrain this horse the right way, you will need to go back to the basics and let it learn that it is ok to walk and relax, most likely if you get on in a small pen and just let the reins loose she will have no idea what to do. lol. I agree with Karen Bale gaits of gold is the site to go to learn how to retrain her the right way. They are also located on FB: https://www.facebook.com/gaitsofgold

Here is a video of her. I had not practiced side passing or pivots in 6 months or more when this video was taken so please ignore the end. I would cut it out if I could figure out how to do it. You can see though how calm she is and smooth. She was not like this at all when I bought her. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qmTOHpaKYg

I would recommend checking out the Gaits of Gold forum (started by the late Brenda Imus): http://gaitsofgold.com/wowbb/ Lots of helpful people over there that can give good advice. In the meantime I would not ask her to move out. Just "work the walk". Work her at a walk, up hills is good, or over cavaletti. Brenda also wrote an article about dealing with horses that rush, which might be helpful.
