What was your favorite Mexican Restaurant growing up?
Mine was Jalisco
Stan H. replied:
USB y G was great, but its spiritual predecessor, the original Maria's (she was Miz El Mongol) on Buford Hwy, was the home of the 99-cent Lunch Special- taco, enchilada y frijoles refritos. Some deal...I ate 3 one day!
Vicky S. replied:
Del Taco was on Roswell at Wieuca.
Larry D. replied:
Taco Bell at Roswell & Wieuca was technically my first, I guess. I also remember a Spanish Restaurant in Underground Atlanta that was good
Michael W. replied:
"Mi Casa" was Atlanta's premier Spanish Restaurant at The White House Hotel downtown in the late 60's
Guy A. replied:
Pam, Taco Bell on Roswell Rd is the first I remember. Then we found El Toro on Buford Hwy in the mid 70's.,owned by Jose Macias and staffed by his family, that included his neice and nephew . They now run Jaliscos( My favorite). His brother is the owner.
Steve T. replied:
Taco Tico in Chamblee was one of the first. But Taco Bell was the first in Buckhead...at least as I recall.
Larry D. replied:
Panchos/Los Mariachis at Piedmont & Roswell was my long time sentimental favorite. But both long eclipsed for me sentimentally by the margaritas & sopa de pollo of Decatur's Coyote Cafe and the closed Ricardo's - though I guess I judge Mexican restaurants by margaritas rather than food
Richard H. replied:
Del Taco! Muchas Gracias!
Vicky S. replied:
Del Taco was better than Taco Bell but it was bought out by Taco Bell, I think.
Pam J. replied:
as a kid, the only place was Taco Bell on Roswell Rd...and it was wonderful!! I think they were like 10 cents a piece. As a "semi" adult, it was the El Toro on Buford Highway, that was located in a hotel. Hardly anyone spoke english...you just pointed on the menu.
Ted G. replied:
El Toro #2 was the first Mexican restaurant I went to other than Taco Bell on Roswell Rd/Wieuca. Later Mexico City Gourmet was where I went.
Catharine S. replied:
El Chico! Lenox Square...LOL
Michael W. replied:
That was Dos Amigos in Peachtree Hills
Tom G. replied:
The Lennox Square Mexican Joint (excuse the Pun!!) was called El Chico. I worked at Dos Amigos in Peachtree Hills, and I thought that the food there was good off of the Clock, which is a rare feat. I, earlier on, worked at the Taco Bell near Chastain, which meant that when I got off, I was a lot closer to the place that we all "Got Off". That would be Chastain.
Brian S. replied:
Dos Amigos in Peachtree hills. I worked there. I made the guacamole and fried the corn torts. It was so good I couldn't help from at least eating one bowl. Haha
Robin S. replied:
El Toro on Buford Highway was one of the first authentic Mexican restaurants to open in Atlanta in the 70's. Los Mariaches at Piedmont and Roswell was good as well as Taxco further north on Roswell Rd.

Greg V. replied:
My first exposure to "Mexican style" was Taco Bell on Roswell Rd.at W.Wieuca, when they hired me away from McDonald's. Think that was a bad corp.move on my part? Seriously..there may have been other mexican restaurants, but I can't place any of them now.
Dang, I should have checked this out while I was down there. Does anyone know if the Beef Cellar bar/restaurant is still in existence in Sandy Springs?
