flashing check engine light is a misfire that is bad enough to permanently damage your catalytic converter. i would bring it to a dealership.

I think this might depend on what kind of vehicle you have, how old it is (New versus old), if you’re still under warranty, and where you live. I’d recommend going to Autozone and have your codes read if your vehicle is throwing a code at you. If not, ask around to see if maybe the issues you’re having is something you can fix yourself. A new brake pad or caliper is an easy fix, but a new muffler might be hard for you based on tools and ability.

Wayne’s Service Plus in Providence is the only place I’ll take my car. They give you an extremely thorough diagnosis of your whole car plus pictures of all the areas that need work, and when they missed something on the initial examination on my car, they fixed it for free ($100 in repairs). I don’t have any personal connection to Wayne’s, I’m just a customer that really appreciates a good mechanic after being given the runaround by tons of shops in R.I. So in the interest of fairness here’s a downside: they’re closed on weekends.
