Mosquito Cafe is another of my favorites - it's not on The Strand or The Seawall and is totally different from all of those places. A family runs it & had to rennovate after the hurricane. They have heavenly homemade soups & divine cakes from the bakery next door. http://www.mosquitocafe.com/

Definitely go to Moody Gardens. You can spend a whole day there. The Strand is also fun. Lots of cool shops. The 5 yr old will like the Elissa. Go to www.galveston.com for lots of stuff to do.
