So - I will post pics tomorrow, when I have a photographer - but I have made a 1938 tweed three piece suit from a German pattern that my great aunt had in her stash......
Nicole F. replied:
Yay! I love having another sewing reenactor! :-) Plastic was more of a celluloid/bakelite back then but some modern pieces look ok. Check out this website for more details: http://luckylucille.com/2013/02/1940 s-buttons-and-trims/ Typical buttons were glass, wood, and the "early" plastics, metal is ok but was rationed so you don't see a lot of it. Some suits had fabric covered buttons that matched the suit. Some swear by rhinestone buttons but they were probably more of a late war addition. If you want most some pictures of the buttons. I'm sure everyone will try to help out. Can't wait to see your pictures!!

As far as shoes some options: 1) oxfords: scroll down to shoes on this page http://353 id.org/nach.html 2) Reproductions: these are quite expensive. I've heard they are worth it but I haven't purchased a pair myself yet. They are great for inspiration. http://www.remixvintageshoes.com/40 shighheels.html
