Looking for a vet recommendation. Haven't been completely satisfied with who we've been going to. I want someone who will care for my dog but give me options beyond the...
Shirl P. replied:
Dr. Johnson at APAW is wonderful. http://www.a-paw.com/
Tatiana A. replied:
We use Dr. Spencer at Beltsville Animal Hospital and have been happy with him. He gives multiple treatment options and is generally open about cost/benefit of a particular course of action.
Sabine H. replied:
Dr. Fink at Beltsville animal hospital. Have taken several fearful and challenging pets to her in the past and she was wonderful with all of them--the easy and the challenging ones--taking her time, being gentle, kind and knowledgeable
Bob R. replied:
Glenn Dale Veterinary Clinic on Lanham-Severn Rd. across from the Giant in Eastgate Shopping Center has cared for our dogs for almost 30 years from Dr. Shema, the original owner and now Dr. Fuentes who bought it from her about 15 years ago.
Lisa E. replied:
My preference is Beltsville AH after being a client at CPAH for years. However, I will tell you that my experiences with Dr. Tuthill have been nightmares and I will drive to Bowie before I will ever go to Beltway again. I am glad that some people have had good experiences with him but the two times I went to him left emotional scars for not only my dog but also my family.
Peggy B. replied:
I got to Dr.Mary Prowell at Beltsville animal hospital, for over 20 years..She is very well liked and gentle..
Bonnie S. replied:
Used Dr. Sidor at Beltsville Animal Hospital for many years until he retired. Now use Dr. Prowell who is not only my vet but also a friend.
Lisa E. replied:
Sheila Maffay-Tuthill. As you were not present it is difficult for you know the circumstances. I had a bad experience and I am sure there are many others who have had positive ones. I will leave it at that. I am fully aware of who Dr. Tuthill is.
Diane F. replied:
Dr. Tuthill was extremely kind, compassionate and accommodating with my family and my 18-year-old cat recently as we had to make life-ending decisions. I have had many animals and many vets over the years but I have never had a better experience in what is always a difficult circumstance. It was a real blessing.
Melanie G. replied:
I go to Beltsville Animal Hospital on Powder Mill. Lots of folks like Spencer, I love Dr. Prowell. But both are good. Prompt, reasonable prices, good service.

Over the past 8 years I've needed after hours vet care several times and I have always taken my dogs to Dr. Tuthill. My first visit was with a new puppy who had been treated for worms but still had them so badly that she was throwing them up by the hundreds. I was beside myself as I'd never seen such a thing. Dr. Tuthill's tone and approach was very calming for both myself and the puppy. He was the vet that was able to finally rid the puppy of worms. At that point in time I had no idea Dr. Tuthill was a neighbor or that I'd be fortunate enough to eventually call him a friend. I had found his practice via google and I had no preconceived notions or expectations. Years later another dog of mine was poisoned. Dr. Tuthill ran through every possibility with me in order to find out what kind of poison it was so he could find out the best possible treatment. Even with all the detective work we couldn't narrow down the culprit because I didn't use any of the usual suspects (slug killer, rat poison...). The dog nearly died but he and his staff didn't give up. Two years later and my dog is still here with us, happy, healthy, and she has many good years left. Dr. Tuthill is very kind, compassionate, honest, and straight forward. I don't expect vets to be warm and fuzzy as I've never heard of anyone going into veterinary medicine for the people.
Elizabeth Y. replied:
Our primary vet isn't warm or fuzzy with the owners either but she's great. We see Dr. Appelbaum at Rocky Gorge in Laurel.
Pamela G. replied:
I'd like to add that my personal response to his practice has been exceptionally positive. Our youngest Westie nearly, very nearly, lost an eye as she had been aggressive with our cat. We called in the middle of a thunder storm and his vet was right outside waiting for us to get her in immediately. Time was of the essence, and his quick and competent attention probably saved her vision. She has always been accident prone and has had 2 ACL surgeries..when we told Dr. Tuthill of our satisfaction at the pet expo he asked to see her walk and run and checked her out all over again. Dr. Dave has to keep that place staffed and open 24/7. They do a great job, and are an asset to the community.
Bob R. replied:
Dr. Tuthill has, twice, treated one of our dogs in a late night, emergency situation. Each time, his work was of the highest caliber. Our vet, just recently, remarked how his "stitching skills were outstanding, particularly given that they were used on our dog's tail," which is one of the most challenging places on a dog that can be sutured. It's important to remember that Beltway Emergency Clinic is like an ER at night (it's a regular, specialty animal clinic during the daytime for: orthopedics, ophthalmology, staffed by other vets, etc.). As an ER at night, procedures like triage, emergency services (without benefit on an animal's documented vet history) etc. are involved. Dr. Tuthill provides quality care during what is a very imperfect late night time and situation to do so, IMHO.
Peggy B. replied:
I go to Beltsville to Dr.Mary Prowell for almost 20 yrs..She is the best one there..
Teresa M. replied:
We use Dr. Spencer also but he is no longer at Beltsville he moved to Fairland Animal Hospital in Silver Spring.
Matt E. replied:
We use College Park Animal Hospital on Route 1, just south of the beltway.
Patti S. replied:
Dr Prowell at Beltsville is awesome!!!
Kristen S. replied:
Dr. Berndt at College Park Animal Hospital is amazing. She's very understanding about balancing financial concerns versus actual payoff for our dog. She has performed several surgeries on our Frenchie (who had several mast cell tumors a few years ago) and has always been a soothing presence for both us and our pup. I can't say enough good things about her, and the office staff at CPAH!
Christina K. replied:
Dr. David Tuthill for true compassion and kindness to animals and their owners. He is a Greenbelter and owns and operates Beltway Emergency Animal Hospital in Glendale.
