I think I have bed bugs. So I'm pretty sure I randomly have bed bugs. I found 4 of them in a bedroom. I live with 3 other people but only found them in one room so far....

Take some deep breaths. Wash everything and dry it as hot as possible and bag it for the time being. Total detail of your home.

Have a bedbug dog come and alert you to where they are. We were sure we had them, had a dog come out and they couldn’t find them anywhere. The $250 saved us from a HUGE extermination bill.

Do you live in an apartment? If so, they are responsible for exterminating them. They are not fun to try to get rid of yourself. Don't be an idiot like me and throw your bed away.

Get a handheld steamer and steam all mattresses, couches, etc and anything you can’t put in the dryer on high heat. Same if you have carpets.

I got bedbugs in a brand new apartment 8 years ago - it really sucked. If you don’t have any pets, I would recommend using diatomaceous earth. You can get it at any home and garden store. It’s a chalky substance that’s white or off white in color and you sprinkle it around your bed in places you’ve seen the bugs. Definitely baseboards, headboards, and in between mattresses if you have like a box spring and a mattress. It causes the bugs to suffocate which is why it worked for me, on top of the heat treatments and calling an exterminator. I’m sorry you’re going through this, it’s really frustrating and nerve-wracking.
vicaphit replied:
You can get diatomaceous earth from lowes or home depot in a pretty large bag for cheap. Look in the pesticides area. You can get food-safe stuff made for vegetable gardens, which is safe around pets. It's a very fine powder that will dry out bed bugs if they walk on it. They'll actively try to avoid it. Sprinkle it around all of the corners and molding in your room. Around the legs of your bed, and on the box spring. Change your sheets often, but don't put it on your sheets directly, because it can be an irritant. I had them years ago and struggled until I got the diatomaceous earth. Stay vigilant and you'll get through it.

Bed bugs love wood so be sure to check baseboards and outlets.

You can check to see if there are more in your actual bed (and roommates) by looking at the seams of your mattress, especially the corners. If you see little black dots, it’s BB poop.

I bought a DIY spray from Home Depot for less than $50 and sprayed the only room we knew they were in. Also washedand dried all of the bedding on super hot and vacuumed really well with the extension hose. Maybe we were just lucky, but it was all done in a weekend and we never saw any evidence of them again. Might as well try that if you're quoted over $1 k by an exterminator like we were.
Bug foggers officially don't work. In fact, I think they've just made the problem worse. Anybody know of affordable professional pest control in the area?
