I wonder if any of Pete Walkers writings may help. He writes a lot about 'Emotional Flashbacks' i.e. overwhelming emotions engulfing certain people and then the unhelpful responses that may be used; substances/ self harming/ staying in bed all day etc. He gives advice on how to manage these flashbacks. After years on medication, following years of mental abuse through childhood and my first marriage, when I was very young, I have discovered other ways of dealing with the depression that ate away at me, and that I allowed, un-knowingly, to continue doing so. It is definitely harder as a teenager, and I suspect even more so as a male, to be open to, or mature enough to be open to, these ideas. If she looks on www.counselling-directory.org.uk and explores therapists within her area, look at their fee structure - many of us charge a low income fee. And - even if it's not stated, ask on the phone - most therapists want to be easily accessible to all, you just have to let us know what you are able to afford. I would offer myself as an option, however I currently don't have any evening spaces.

Some counsellors offer low-waged rates, it's worth shopping around on the 'phone to see who will be flexible, and have a chat before you commit to a session. Sara Lambert is a counsellor in Lewes.

I'm not sure there's anything regular at Zu...if I knew I'd be going...have you tried the Boddisatva Meditation Centre or the Brighton Buddhist Centre, both in Brighton..there are others in Brighton too..I recommend going on a retreat if you can. I did last year, for a week at Boddisatva, and it was amazing. Tomorrow I leave Lewes for Hereford where I'm doing a ten day Vipassana retreat at Dhamma Dipa...I also read Eckhart Tolle..Create a New Life...which did alot for my mental state and I'd recommend that book 100%...get it from the library or Amazon...Good luck. xx

Learning hasn't made me any happier, at ease, or more comfortable in my skin, or at least I've been no better off for learning any techniques, disciplines, interventions, body postures, breath control, metaphysics, psychoanalytical models, affirmations, mantras etc.. But when I started having direct insights into the mechanics of everything that I'd ever experienced or will experience, in this life or any other... I found huge relief.. far less anxiety.. far less sadness.. because these feelings didn't mean the same from my new point of view, from my shifted vantage point. I'm just sharing my experience of going directly to the centre of the metaphorical 'wheel of life', where it doesn't matter how fast the wheel spins, one is always still. We have little control of the world outside of us, so there is no point trying to find permanent wellbeing there. It has to come from inside, but when we look there we see turmoil, so some use drugs and alcohol to change the negative thoughts and feelings into positive ones, but that is a road to ruin unless one is very strong. We can learn techniques for temporarily inducing more relaxed states of mind but again, this can never be permanent. We can indulge positive points of view, and replace negative ones, but it takes so much of our energy to keep positive all the time. We can try changing the underlying and erroneous beliefs (programs) which create the illusory thoughts that feel so painful, but even with the best techniques like Reference Point Therapy, it's a never ending process, sapping our zest for life. The only way to find complete mental and emotional stability is to shift our awareness to a higher vantage point. That doesn't mean we don't get triggered or feel irritated or bored, we just recover so much quicker, and have much greater empathy and compassion for everyone else. The Three Principles teachings offer the opportunity to make that shift, for some people in an instant, for some over more time. There's also the Balanced View training which I highly recommend, similar but very different. A little less accessible in my opinion, but that is just a point of view. Anyway, I hope my sharing has helped in some way.:0)
