Any one remember a pizza place in Cheektowaga called Bon-Ed's? Not sure if I'm spelling it right. I had a cousin who said it was the best in town---I didn't much care...

Bon-Ed's was named for its owners, Bonita and Edward. The pizzeria was located at 2405 William St. (it's still a pizzeria -- Ricota's). We did not live in that neighborhood but bought pizza there often in the early '60s -- that's how we got to know the owners. My little brother's godparents lived about a block away from Bon-Ed's and we had their pizza once and then Mom had to have it whenever we wanted pizza. The owner had a strange practice: He would make 55 lbs. of dough each day. When he ran out, he closed. Then (in those low-tech days) he would take the phone off the hook. If you kept calling the pizzeria and got a busy signal each time, it was probable that he was closed. But I recall times we drove down there "just to make sure." On busy nights he'd be closed by 8:30 p.m. or 9 p.m. but on slow nights he was open LATE. I recall one "slow" night we went to pick up a pizza and Ed had the TV on and it was Jack Paar's last night on The Tonight Show (just him and his dog in an empty studio, sitting in the studio audience's seats). Great pizza, good price, strange hours. After a while, we switched to Bocce Club, Vince's and Leonardi's -- all closer to our home in the Bailey-Delavan section. I do not know when Bon-Ed's closed or changed hands.
