The guys that changed my lead pipe to copper from the water meter to the watermain outside hired Salmon Plumbing to do the inside work connecting the water meter to the water heater. The plumber installed it incorrectly by omitting the tap (according to the City water line inspector). I guess it was something that he should have known because the inspector called Salmon Plumbing to get it changed. If you have a home in this neighbourhood and you have children MAKE SURE you verify that your outside line to the main has been changed from the original lead pipe to copper. At one time calcium deposits from the water built up and coated the lead pipes so none leached into your drinking water however the city changed the water purification here following the Walkerton disaster and the water was became slightly more acidic which stripped all the deposits off the pipes and laid bare the lead. The lead then leaches into the water and my water showed elevated lead levels. Elevated lead levels leads to learning difficulties and brain damage especially to young children. The City will test your water for free and even check whether your lead line has been replaced. It cost me about $1000 to replace my line about 5,6 or 7 years ago. The advantage is that they replace the 1/2 inch line with a 3/4 inch line which may improve water pressure throughout the house. The next time you replace your plumbing make your main line 3/4 but keep your leads off it 1/2 inch. It is usually done no dig except at the water shut-off at your property line. http://www.lfpress.com/news/london/2010/02/26/13047411.html

Oliver G. replied:
Hi Amy. I'm pretty busy with school & family for the next few months. Do your in-laws live in OEV? Marty's right... definately a sewer problem. Is it just confined to their kitchen sink, or is their floor drains, washroom and laundry backing up in basement (if they have fixtures in the basement). One very important issue to consider is... IS THERE A BUILDING TRAP installed on the drainage system? These were installed in ALL homes in Old East / Old North / Old South back in the 1880's - 1950's. A building trap is essentially a Large 4" PTrap that connects to your drainage system, After leaving your house, but before connecting to the street sewer. These Building Traps Always plug with sanitary waste or roots and make cleaning/angering the sewer almost impossible. If your house has a Building Trap it needs to be Removed before a company / Plumber can properly Camera, Auger/Clean your sewer....I removed mine this past summer... Dug down (in driveway) 10' feet (all sand), cut and replaced with 4" Plastic Pipe and new clean out for Camera & Auger.

So Amy... I would call Pope Plumbing (they are friends of mine) . They've been in the London Plumbing Industry for 50 plus years and are very reliable and honest.
