Place to rent in or around Cambridge that are relatively cheap Hello everyone. I was hired to work for a company in Science Park for a salary of about 1400£ a month and...

Cambridge is a very expensive town, one of most expensive place in the UK. Even teachers/professors are struggling to pay rent, expenses etc I don't want to sound rude but you might need to move in North east or a different area if you want to survive and save money. A job with £1400 you can find anywhere in this country, or even a better salary. If you still want to stay in Cambridge look on rightmove or zoopla.

That's a surprisingly low salary for a job on the Science Park. I don't think you're going to find anything in Cambridge itself which is affordable, or in the nearby villages. Probably your best bet would be to look at St Ives or Huntingdon and come in on the guided bus. Littleport and Downham Market are options on the train line - I think the parts of Ely which are within reach of the station are likely to be too expensive as well.

Cambridge is good for career development and looks good on your CV but 1400 is a bit low to live on your own. I started a little higher and didn't move to my own place before a got a nice raise. You can go for shared accommodation in the first months and that should set you back around 500. If you looking to move alone I would suggest looking at Histon/Impington (easy cycle to the Science Park) and then moving outwards. Even best case scenario you are looking at 1000/month in expenses if you move alone.

The cheapest solo living you'll find in Cambridge centre will be £750 at the very minimum. To live in Cambridge on your salary, you're looking at a house share. As another poster said, look along the bus way. St. Ives might be doable.

To add a different perspective: It's very much possible to live in or near Cambridge, cycling distance, for that salary. You just have to be sensible with groceries (£140/mth?) and fun and games (£300/mth). After that, you have £960 to spend on accommodation and any other incidentals. Find shared accommodation for £500 - - that's a safe approximation. Then assume £100 in other monthly incidentals that I missed (bills, council tax maybe) and put £360 to savings. That's nearly 25% of your monthly income - - well done. What am I missing :P?

If you want to live in cambridge shared living is the only way. Sometimes some gems appear on the cambridge accommodation notice board, I suggest checking here regularly: http://www.brettward.co.uk/canb/

The Stephensons number 9 is being proposed to be a suitable replacement and would be re-routed from it's current route. The first would come through Notley about 7:45 and the last about 17:30. It's only hourly and won't run on a weekend. So not actually a suitable alternative option for many. http://www.essexinfo.net/great-notley-parish-council/breaking-news/new-bus-timetable-for-the-no/
Is there a UK travel planner website that combines train and bus companies?
