If you want to try something by yourself, there is a small chance for the problem to be fixed simply by upgrading your phone to the latest firmware. To do that you simply need to install the official Samsung Kies http://www.samsung.com/ca/support/usefulsoftware/KIES/JSP to your computer, open Kies and connect your phone to your computer using the usb cable and wait for the drivers to be installed, and then upgrade to the latest firmware (for your model I think the latest firmware is Android 4.1.2)

Ok, I'm glad you moved on then as at this point it was the fastest and surest way out of all of this. This is the info in regards to the problem and the probable solution, but it's a somewhat multistep process and needs to be done by a somewhat advanced user (eg. a mobile technician). Theres quite a lot out there if you google, but I can't vouch for quality. I used a guy in Barbican that my friend recommended. friendly guy, quick, cheap. http://revivemydevice.com/ I saw timpsons do it too, but luckily I haven't had the need to use them.

i know it's gonna be more expensive but if he's apprehensive about 3 rd party weirdness (as he should be, in my experience): http://www.apple.com/uk/retail/geniusbar/ is really the way to go. also worth signing him up for some workshops while you're at it, so that he can figure out how to use it.

Pretty much anywhere on Tottenham Court Road. Also, there is a cobblers in Euston station that does mobile phone repairs. It's next to the toilet/cashpoint.
