Www.rvtowcheck.com and run your numbers. Keep in mind, brand is not as important as how a truck is built. Differences in rear end gear ratios will affect tow rating more than the logo on the grill. That said, our 2013 F150 3.5L Ecoboost handles our 30' '08 Classic like a dream, in mountains, on the plains, and in the back roads.

I pull a 34 ft Airstream with a 2007 2500HD Chevy and it pulls great! Just last week we pulled it over the Appalachians and it performed perfectly.
Jerry W. replied:
I have my Dads old truck. 2009 1500 with 5.3L and 3.73 gears. It does okay pulling our 27FB. Power isn't great off the line, but is fine once rolling. Have considered a newer truck. Looked at 3/4 ton, but when the top 1500 is rated for 12000 lbs, 5000 more than our trailer at max weight, I have a hard time justifying the extra expense. I would get the larger engine, however.
Jim N. replied:
I have a 2008 1500 Chevy and it tows our 26' overlander just fine it does feel slightly underpowered on super steep hills but I'm sure the 2500 has a bigger v8 with plenty of horses to get the job done!

So what are your guys recommendations for a good towing vehicle, perfobably a SUV with good gas mileage?
GR-Janice D. replied:
Ford Expedition with Ecoboost does a fantastic job with our 31' International Sovereign.

We just bought a 2015 Lincoln Navigator with the Ecoboost and a beefed up rear end to pull our 28 foot '78 Ambassador Land Yacht. This article helped us make the decision. Looking for help. 2018 IS. Towing back from eclipse. Just got flagged down. All running lights off. Checked 7 way connector. Good and tight.
Any ideas?
Chae A. replied:
Assuming you have good battery, you can run a wire or a blade fuse between pins 3 and 4 of the 7 wire plug to test the running lights. You can also test other lights. Here's the diagram. If all the lights light up, then you have narrowed it to the car. http://www.centrevilletrailer.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/trucksocket.png

My girlfriend and I are picking up a Basecamp this week. I was looking for advice on a couple of things.
1. Is there a particular hitch you'd recommend? I'll be towing...
Mark O. replied:
As far as hitches are concerned, considering the size and weight of a Basecamp you have to decide if you want a weight distribution hitch or not. Most WD have some built in sway control and adding additional sway control isn't difficult. I have heard a lot of really good reviews and comments about the Anderson hitch--light and easy to install and use with very good built in sway control. They aren't inexpensive but you can spend a whole lot more on some other brands of hitches. https://www.andersenhitches.com/Catalog/andersen-nosway-weight-distribution-hitch.aspx

Carl R. replied:
We did pretty much the same in January 2015 in a driving snow storm. We took I-95 and stayed our first night at Cherry Hill RV Park in College Park, Maryland. Virtually empty this time of year with plenty of pull-through sites which you will appreciate if you have no backing experience!
Jeff V. replied:
Having lived in the Baltimore / DC area, avoid it at all costs towing your new AS as newbies... Joe Quinn Sr has a solid answer to reroute the area. While ATL is no treat either, depending where you are in the Panhandle, I75 may be an option..... Better road with fewer serious unavoidable "bumps"

Moab has so much to offer, do not pass up all thats around this area. Try Ken's Lake campground, think the have water & Electric. There are lots of camping areas near and around Dead horse Point SP. beyond that is go to. Canyonlands Island in the Sky, and Needles Canyonlands, Arches. There are campgrounds along the Colorado River there along the Potash Rd. and I think is called maybe River Rd. And along hwy 128 which runs along the Colorado River to Castle Valley. Of course the hard part will be the length of your trailer. We like to stay at Spanish Trails RV. $$ but for a couple of weeks we took day trips to all the area attractions and enjoyed all the great little restaurants in Moab. Moab's a favorite for us.

Wabasis Lake is nice, good trails for dog walking. We used to live on the lake and would go over there to play. Also Hoffmaster State Park and Holland SP depending on how close to Grand Rapids you want to be. I am not sure if they have full hookups though off hand, but Google can help with that. Everyone at the local Airstream dealer are extremely nice and camp themselves, so they would be a great resource; I would give them a call! Woodland Travel Center.
