GIK Acoustics will help you with that if you're buying heir products (which I can highly recommend). They can tell you want you need and where to place it based on your room dimensions and needs.

I'd try DIY first, its very educational. Search over on GearSlutz and Booth Junkie on YouTube. Lots of great resources for DIY there, and the owners of a few of the companies that make the gear are extremely generous with their time. You can get a decent setup and learn something in the process. If you have more money than time, you could just look around for an established small studio in your town and hire the engineer who works there to help. Keep it local and build relationships wherever you can.

A lot depends on the type of work you're doing in your home studio. I have designed quite a few studios, large and small and worked as an acoustic consultant. What do you want to do in your studio? That's the first question.

Where are you?

are you doing construction? like, either soundproofing and/or customized, built-in acoustic treatment? if so- there are a very few people who do great work on that front. they charge a lot, but they're worth every penny. if you're using removable treatment (e.g. panels from GIK or Real Traps), and not doing soundproofing, then there are many more people who can do a great job consulting, and practical advice from a working engineer/mixer may be more helpful than a full-on consult from an acoustician/architect.

Auralex would do that kinda

There are some reports on Gearslutz of guys who have hired consultants. From what I've read they at least pay for themselves, and sometimes save you a lot of money. If you really want to do a room right there's just so many pitfalls for a novice to acoustics and physics. Some of the acoustic guys that do consulting hang out and answer questions on the forum too (J.H. Brandt, Dandan, Andre). I'm sure there are others too.

Found a guy through my old school network that went heavily into acoustics consulting and had him measure my new room and roll out a plan for acoustics and studio furniture. Cost me around €1000, but it was pretty well worth it, the room sounds fantastic.
Can anybody recommend a dependable, reasonably-priced (not cheap, just fair) general contractor in the West Roxbury/Roslindale/Dedham area? We're looking to get a quote...
