Does anyone have sewer line insurance? Our regular homeowners insurance doesn't cover outside the home to the street. Figured it was worth looking into.
Julia S. replied:
Homeowners Insurance does not cover interior plumbing usually. I am an insurance agent and have had plumbing claims on my own policy. The policy covers ensuing damage from a plumbing leak, but it does not pay to actually repair the pipe. It is considered a maintenance issue. I had a partially clogged waste pipe from corrosion that caused bath water to back up and come out a sink downstairs and flood my basement, insurance only paid to dry the basement and replace the carpet, it did not cover the repairs the plumber had to make, thankfully our home warranty did. Then in the house I live in now the shower was leaking, and caused the ceiling in the kitchen to collapse. The insurance paid to fix the ceiling, but not to fix the leaking shower, which required replacing the whole shower basin and tile surround in the shower. Interior plumbing coverage through aqua or a home warranty is worth the cost. I’m not sure what the Aqua/Home Serve policy would cover exactly, it would be important to read the fine print.
