Anyone have any suggestions for dog with dry skin? They were taken to the vet ($210 later) because of supposedly skin infection they were given a shot and antibiotics -...
Tammy E. replied:
This is a big one so I will make a list:) 1. VetsBest hypoallergenic shampoo with 10 drops of melaleuca added. Bathe weekly leaving shampoo on for 10 minutes. 2. Coconut oil- add 1/2 tsp per 10 pounds body weight to each meal. After bathing apply coconut oil to dry areas. Allow to sit for 10 minutes then wash off. 3. A good quality fish oil- Nordic Naturals for example. Animals can't synthesize their own omega 3 so they become deficient and their skin suffers. I see that you added one so please make sure it's good quality and correct dose. 4. Diet is very important- what are you feeding? 5. Frankincense- apply topically to the paw twice a day for immune support. 6. Without seeing the skin it will be tough for me to give more specific treatments so I hope this helps. If the vet gave an antibiotic I would imagine there were signs of infection. You could make a spray with melaleuca and lavender to apply daily. This could be made with fractionated coconut oil or spring water. 7. Ultimately dry skin is secondary to a imbalance in the gut called 'leaky gut'. The GI tract needs to heal. This is done with diet and certain supplements. Giving the LLV would definitely help as well as adding gelatin to their food and L-glutamine. Probiotics are also a must. I realize this is quite a bit of information to wrap your head around. Let me know if I need to clarify any of the points. 8. Last one- use caution with vaccines. The immune system is already compromised and vaccines could be too much. Titers (antibody levels) can be done for some and not all are absolutely necessary.

Barbara Hess, this is a great read. Maybe you don't need it for your furry babies but thought you would like it.
Jennifer N. replied:
Wow! Thank you so much- They have been on Royal Canine - I just purchased them some wet organic food - Should I use the same amount of oil - 1 is 4 pounds the other is 6 pounds. They already got their vaccines and the one was suffering from dry skin at the time. The other one started losing her hair in the back. Something is going on with them- The hair came back but the other one is now dry again and itchy. Where do you buy the VetsBest shampoo? How do I give them the probiotic?
Tammy E. replied:
VetsBest shampoo is at Vitamin Shoppe and PetCo. Since their weight is so close they could get the same amount of oil. I would start at 1/2 tsp per day and try to work up to twice a day. Coconut oil can have a detox affect so if they get diarrhea decrease the dose. Since they got vaccines I would recommend giving them Turmeric to detox them, 250 mg per day in addition to the frankincense. Animal probiotics come in a powder form. Vitamin Shoppe has a pet area so you could look there. Also you could go to mercola.com and order one. I would recommend finding Dr Mercola's website and sign up for his articles as well as the holistic veterinarian he works with- Dr Becker. For food- the most species appropriate diet would be a well balanced raw diet or a well balanced home cooked diet. The dry food is processed and cooked at such high temperatures that many dogs can't get enough nutrition out of it. Orijen is one dry food that is cooked at a lower temperature to help avoid that. Animals bodies need 70% moisture in their food so this is why home cooked or raw is best. What they eat is the absolute most important thing. I have seen animals with horrible skin problems become healthy and have amazing skin just by changing them to raw or home cooked. Dr Becker has articles about species appropriate diets. The wet organic food is a great start.
Tammy E. replied:
Just make sure for long term home cooked meals that you get a book on how to well balance it. Dr Becker has a book. A company that you can also find supplements online is wholistic pet organics. If you would like to have them see a holistic vet there is Coastal Animal Hospital in Rockledge (where I work:)). Good luck and have fun!!

I think this whole vet thing has gone crazy and has become a money making scheme. There are natural remedies that you can find to help with arthritis and even heart worm! Just a word about the Animal Emergency Clinic on Eau Galle..I brought my 18 year old dog there to be euthanized on a Sunday. Against my vets advice, I had waited too long to do it. The owner was on call. He repeatedly tried to convince me to hospitalize him. He was blind and couldn't stand. It was his time. It took 2 hours for him to do this. I wanted to be with him at the end. My dog was screaming in pain during the first try. He then tells me that he was using the wrong size needle and left the room to get a smaller one. During the second attempt he proceeds to tell me how the drug is traveling to his heart, while my dog is still screaming..at this point, my friend starts screaming at the vet and runs out crying. After he passes, I ask if I can pick him up the next morning for cremation. He tells me it will cost me $36 to keep him, then asks if I want to put him in a towel before he goes in the bag..I had to run out..my daughter picked him up the next day. The bill was $176.. Judge for yourselves...

I work for Animal Specialty & Emergency Hospital. We have board certified Internal Medicine specialist and Surgeons and 24 hour emergency only, no routine care.
