I also got myself a 3 d printer a week ago. No tools needed now. I use onshape.com (free) for 3 d drawing, and find nice things to print at thingiverse.com

Congrats, enjoy! I just got one at Christmas. Huge learning curve, but loving it!

Tool wise you don't need too much besides what came with the printer. I have a razor blade scraper that I've found to be useful for getting prints off of a glass bed. Some canned air and isopropyl alcohol for cleaning are helpful as well. I also use a glue stick (Elmer's) on the glass bed.
For modeling I'd say start with Tinkercad for simple things. If you find you want to make more complicated models Fusion360 is free for home use and is very powerful. There's a bunch of good tutorials on YouTube. Even with how powerful Fusion360 is I still crack open Tinkercad occasionally because it's so simple.
Thingiverse has a huge selection of free models to download and print. You could go a long time without actually modeling anything. There's other sites as well that I'm less familiar with.
For getting good quality prints out of your printer get familiar with your slicer settings. Learning to drive your slicer is often the difference between a mediocre print and a good print. I like Cura but I know Prusaslicer is popular as well. I would skip whatever slicer software came with the printer, I think it's usually just a rebranded out of date copy of Cura.
Filament wise I've found that Overture isn't bad for the money, and a lot of people like Hatchbox. I don't have much experience with other brands, but I've had mostly good luck with those two. I think Hatchbox PETG prints a bit nicer than Overture PETG, but the Overture PLA Pro is really nice to work with.
I've found the CHEP YouTube channel to be really helpful.
