Mechanic recommendation? Hey everyone, I recently moved to Madison from out of state. I have a high mileage Toyota that has been cared for meticulously over the years...

I really like S&K in Sun Prairie. They've been great to deal with and have reasonable prices.

Phoenix Foreign Car has been nothing short of wonderful to my wife and I. Always reasonably priced and super down to earth (aka not trying to get you on a slimy up-sell).

I'm no mechanic but I can't think of any fluids that would need to be changed. Even when it comes to oil, use whatever Toyota recommends in the manual, which is probably what's already in your engine. I've never even used low temp windshield washer fluid.
If you really want to "winterize" your car then have the battery checked at any place that sells batteries and if it needs to be replaced spend more now to get something rated for high cold cranking amps. The $60 battery special is not going to crank your engine over in the morning when it's been -10 all night. Even if it does, it won't 3 years from now. Then buy some big heavy jumper cables anyway to store in your car and learn how to use them so you can help all the people you come across that bought the $60 battery instead of the $90 one...we're friendly & helpful up in these parts.
Then check your tires. All season tires will be fine around town in the snow and what like 98% of people use but they need to be in good condition. If the tread is low replace them.

I will probably be down voted for this, but here goes. My wife drives an 03 Camry with 150K on it and takes it to Smart Toyota on O'Dana. They have treated her very well. So well, I bought a '14 Camry and I take it to them. Even though my favorite shop is right down the street (Capitol Tire.)

Thanks everyone. Good recommendations and good points. I'm glad to hear that the battery is really the only thing that needs special consideration for the winter. I'll get it checked.

Chet's Auto Repair on Aberg is top quality, but they're a bit higher priced than the rest.
Recommendations for an honest and fair mechanic in Middleton? My wife's brakes are out and she probably needs a new master brake cylinder or pads and rotors.
Can...

Bennetts auto repair. I took my car in here by a recommendation from a coworker last November, very nice people. I was having issues with my rear brakes, they were rusted. I don't know if this is a fair price or not, but total bill was $313 to get the brakes and rotors replaced.

Tom Arneson he has the shop at the corner of university and gammon across from the co-op. Best mechanic I've ever used and very affordable. He diagnosed an issue with my Toyota last month that confused Toyota themselves. Big issue the dealers couldn't figure out but they got it.
DasSchnootz replied:
Whatever you do, stay away from Tires Plus. They misdiagnosed my brake issues by saying mine were fine, but in reality I needed new pads and rotors.

Arneson's is awesome. They're friendly, fairly priced and will work with you. They're at 7008 University Ave.
Zab11 replied:
Arneson's is the sort of neighborhood garage that draws business entirely based on loyal, repeat customers and word of mouth recommendations. They're exactly what you're looking for.

I don't have much experience with non-dealer mechanics, but I can say good things about Capitol Tire. I had an issue with my door handle, the dealer quoted me about $300 for the part and $100 more to paint it. Capitol Tire told me the part would be $130 (from the dealer - figure that) and that painting would be another $100. About 2 minutes after Capitol Tire told me that, they called me back to say the penetrating oil they sprayed on the door handle when they took it apart started to work, and that the part replacement wasn't needed, it'd just be $20 to take it apart and spray penetrating oil.

*brakes Also don't drive it if the brakes are totally gone. Replacing the rotors will cost you more than a tow

Wrench auto (Laura lane just off of Parmenter) is pretty awesome. I've taken my car there for years, and they have always done an excellent job. They are very honest and will tell you if something doesn't need to be replaced. They were voted best of Madison a few times, but now that dealerships are allowed to enter the repair category, they dominate. http://www.wrenchauto.com/
In 2 days I am going to need someone to tow my Volvo to Sun Prairie so I can have a mechanic toss in my fuel pressure sensor... can anyone do me a solid? PLEASE PLEASE...
