Can anyone recommend a plant nursery in the DMV area? Since the wife and I are now homeowners, we have a sudden urge to cultivate the land. We're looking for a good...

Merrifield garden center. There's one in Merrifield (obviously) another in Fair Oaks and one in Gainesville. I've been to the Merrifield and Fair Oaks locations, the people have been incredibly helpful and they really have everything you'd need. Fairly expensive though.

In DC proper there is Johnson's on Wisconsin Ave in Tenleytown. There is also American right outside DC on River Road. Both these places are pretty small though and might not have berry bushes. [The Behnke](http://behnkes.com/website/) is a little further out on River Rd in Potomac, and they will have a much bigger selection. For bigger nurseries further out, check out [this thread](http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/midatl/msg0213094419886.html?18) from GardenWeb.

If you are looking for a traditional nursery, Merrifield Garden Center is a good one. Behnke, too (there are several locations for them, I have only been to the Beltsville location.) I usually go to Stadler now, but that might be a bit of a haul for you. Happy Spring!

Congrats on the new house! I also think Merrifield is a great choice. However, I would reconsider the honeysuckle. It's considered an [invasive species](http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/natural_heritage/documents/fslobe.pdf) in the area. If you want some other suggestions, here's some [links from Arlington County](http://www.arlingtonva.us/departments/ParksRecreation/scripts/parks/ParksRecreationScriptsParksInvasiveResources.aspx). You can also check with the [Virginia Cooperative Extension] (http://www.ext.vt.edu/). I think they run a booth at my local farmer's market during the summer. Sorry for the Virginia-centric links.

I'm not sure how good this nursery is, but I know there are a lot of Meadows Farms in the Northern VA/MD area so it might be good in terms of convenience. [Meadows Farms locations](http://www.meadowsfarms.com/About-Us/Garden-Center-Locations.aspx)

Sorry I'm not sure what DMV area means. There's [old city green](http://www.oldcitygreen.com/) right smack in the middle of DC. I've only been there twice for plants, but they seem to be an "urban cultivation" type of place

If you're just looking for indoor plants and pots, check out http://www.interiorscapes.com/MonthlySale.aspx. Monthly sale first Saturday of every month. Snagged a 6' bamboo palm and a small orchid for $18 last time I went.

I live in Milwaukee and go all the way out to Milaeger's in Racine for plant stuff. Granted it's not too close for you, but I frequently go out that way so it's not much of a hassle. They have probably the best selection of nursery stuff within a couple hours of Milwaukee.

Minors is worth a stop no matter what. Nice layout, named modern plant varieties and friendly and knowledgeable staff. Wear boots if you are looking for trees and shrubs. It can get muddy. Steins actually has high quality vegetable plants that are kept in hoop style greenhouses. They are usually well tended. Two brothers (Jack and Vic) ran the business for many years. While it started out small they really expanded over the years. I think their major profit center is Holiday Sales. Home Depot/Lowes trees and shrubs are suitable for the back 40 or side yard type plantings. Very common stuff. Care varies from store to store. Vendors supply the plants so you will find the same thing at each location. Just the quantity varies. The owner of Plant Land is a wild man.... plants are better than any big box store. Milaeger's is also a must see operation but a bit of a drive from MKE. Have fun
