$400 is cheap (suspiciously cheap actually) Data recovery from failed drives is something that takes experts with really expensive equipment that will probably not exist locally. If the drive is truly damaged (making clicking noises) send it to the pros if you really want you data back. Be prepared to spend $1000 if they have to send it to the clean room to get the data off. If you continue to have trouble I would recommend calling or contacting KJ's Used Electronics. They are a local business that works out of their home. Neal is very proficient and diagnosed my highly infected laptop and repaired it to excellent (like brand new) working condition.
