Could anyone recommend a Montreal-based family lawyer to deal with a separation/divorce where one spouse has left the country and has effectively disappeared?

Need more info. If you are common law you do not have the same rights as if you were married In the specific case of the house: If the house is in your boyfriends name, you are entitled to 0%. If it is in both your names, then the proceeds of the sale are split 50/50.
The concept of division of property does NOT apply to common law couples in Quebec, only married ones. You can sign a contract in the beginning of the relationship (or during) that establishes who gets what.
So unless you are married, the law does not do much to protect you (the rules are different if you have kids). From the link below "(...)the court process is the same as for two people who are not in a relationship and who have property or money issues to be settled by a judge. These types of cases aren't handled from a family law point of view."

The [Centre de Justice de Proximité](http://justicedeproximite.qc.ca/en/greater-montreal/) downtown is a great place to start. They'll help you find out if you qualify for legal aid, and can answer basic questions for you, and point you in the right direction in general. They were very helpful for my wife and I working on a custody issue with her ex.

A very experienced family lawyer who usually tries to push for mediation unlike most who generally go for the more expensive trial option. Good luck!

Assuming you're common law and assuming that's the same as divorce, the system as I understand it is that you can either agree on it and submit the agreement to the courts, or you can basically consume 90% of the value of everything you own and have a judge decide which side gets what. I'd start by looking for a good mediator, not a lawyer.
