Where is the oldest and still open restaurant in Burke County???
Jerry C. replied:
Street name is East Meeting St. The restaurant was kind of across from Morrison's Body Shop area. Can't remember the name either but we have talked about it on here not long ago and others were telling the name. I just remember Joe Tolbert having an Ice Cream place in the back for a while.
Brenda A. replied:
Originally Dude's Drive-in
Andrea K. replied:
Twin Circles. I ate there in 1955 and I played miniture golf at a little course right next to it owned by Jerry McMahon.
Susan F. replied:
@Cookie: The Boxwood was the first place I know of that served pizza in the Morganton area. I remember going there on a date in 67 to get pizza. The Village Inn was only located on Hwy 70 in Hickory.
Stephen R. replied:
The Burger King was opened after 1976. We were married in 1976, and was after that. My wife's uncle owned the land it is on and I remember it being discussed shortly after we were married.
Andrea K. replied:
probably Twin Circles and the Rainbow Inn which changed it's name to Timberwoods They were both here in the 50's.
Dennis W. replied:
Andrea, I think Rainbow Inn was built in mid 60's. Rainbow Grill, was across from the old Mimosa Theater parking lot for many years before they built Rainbow Inn.
Jason R. replied:
I joined the Marines in '63. At that time, 18 S. was still two lane and the city limits ended at the railroad underpass on S. Sterling St. There was no Hardee's, Shoneys, McDonalds, Burger King in Morganton at that time. All restaurants in Morganton were locally owned Mom and Pops.
Susan D. replied:
The Starlight Fish Camp opened Friday, March 15, 1973...I was one of the first 2 waitresses...worked there for 2 years on the weekends while in HS...seems like yesterday...
Jason R. replied:
Reading this post makes me feel old. In the 50's, Pink had Callahan's Grill located across from Fisher's Market on E. Union. They had the absolute best hotdog ever with Bob Shepherd's a close second. Pat owned and operated Twin Circle. Sometime in the 50's, Pink shut down and went in with Pat at the Twin Circle. We moved to Amheart Rd. in 1959 and the Twin Circle was already an established place by then with Pat and Pink running it. I think Pat's Snack Bar didn't start in the Pool Room until sometime in the 60's.
Stephen R. replied:
For continuous use, I would add The Rainbow. It was originally across the street from The Caldwell Hotel (Cinema now). It was then moved to Interstate 40 as The Rainbow Inn and Restaurant and eventually became Timberwoods.
Anne L. replied:
When I was visiting relatives in 1968, I remember a hamburger place across the intersection from where the Medicine Shop is located now. Kind of tucked in behind the gas station across from Rose's. My Uncle Ed took me there once to get my first "store-bought" burger, and all I can remember is that the bun was the size of a dinner plate!
Rhonda R. replied:
Rainbow Inn...now Timberwoods...
Alison M. replied:
Starlight Fish Camp?
Mary L. replied:
Not sure, I just remember going there as a child when it used to be Shoney's. Do you recall the 'Big Boy' statue out front? http://clatl.com/binary/ff0 f/arts_isitart3-1_19.jpg
There was a restaurant on Main Street on the right up just a short way from Ham's that I believe the Rainbow Inn started in? Was that Rader's? Does anyone know that or...
Sherry C. replied:
Raders Cafe was in Morganton and Raders Grocery store was in Drexel...two seperate places
James S. replied:
The Rainbow Grill (not to be confused with the Rainbow Inn) was on South Sterling where Dr. Patty Kerchoff's office is now.
Lisa L. replied:
Raders was the grocery store at the lower drexel intersection where O'Riellys auto parts is now, and the name of the chicken joint was Holiday Fried Chicken. It may have changed to KFC, and I don't remember, but it started out as Holiday.I'm a fat girl-I remember food....lol
Gloria B. replied:
There was a Morganton grill around there too. a grocery store where The Hardware store is beside Nature's Bounty
So I go to Zekos in morganton which says they have "authentic" italian food. :/ it was so/so nothing I would recommend. Well, the brothers that own it and do the food...
Picture taking in early or mid 40s. Does anyone recognize the restaurant? Picture seems to be a mirror image . . . maybe Times Ave. Possibly taken in Catawba County...
