Hi - I had a great local guide - Jack Sheremetoff - his website is www.baikaler.com - he has a few hostels in the area and also runs group and private tours. Anything from a low key look around the region through to more adventurous stuff like cycling the frozen lake etc...

Thinking of Sochi for a week of snowboarding at the start of March. Seems quite cheap at the moment. Any recommendations for hotels or experience with the conditions...
The Golden Tulip is a rare example of a 3* in Russia that exceeds expectation. It's also up in Roza Khutor, in the heart of the ski resort. I was there in 2013 to report on the world Cross-Country skiing championship and enjoyed the hotel. No idea how much snow you'll have, nor whether the apres-ski in Roza Khutor has improved much - the resort was still being finished when we were there.

Riders Lodge is a good option. It is right on the slope. You can put your boots on and off you go. You can have half board there.

I had a friend stay at Marco Polo on Patriarshi, he liked it.
And I made friends with Andrea in Steglitz (South Berlin), she rents a whole house for peanuts (Casa Chabelis in her garden) The big house she uses for tourists and construction workers (not so recommendable but extremely cheap) http://www.urlaub-anbieter.com/casachabeli-2.htm

Large respectable hotels in the vicinity of Kropotkinskaya/Park kultury would be the Golden Ring and Mercure Arbat (these are more like Smolenskaya, but still), also President Hotel in Yakimanka st. might be worth a try (this is more Oktyabrskaya). There's a bunch of smaller (cheaper?) hotels in the area, but the quality varies.
