The interesting thing about the Atarazanas market http://www.mercadodeatarazanas.com/ is that it used to be a boat-building workshop. And it was by the sea! Where you are now swept along on the tide of shoppers and tourists, back in the 14 th century you'd have been swept aside by the tide! Truly!

Hi Barbara, there are a plethora of books about the civil war, but " A Concise History of the Spanish Civil War" by Paul Preston is a good one to start with. The Spanish Civil War by Hugh Thomas is heavy going at some 1000 pages, but is regarded as THE book to read about the war. Paul Preston also wrote " Franco, a biography ". There are many other books, and Amazon is a good source for them. Most of Europe, apart from Franco's fascist buddies, was oblivious to what was happening here, and were busy with keeping Hitler at bay. Franco suppressed any media coverage of events, and as Spain was years behind the rest of Europe in development, it was easy for him to do. In my little hamlet, there are families who still have animosity toward each other because of events up to 1975, when Franco died, and the regime ended.
