NYC area community query: Can you recommend a psychologist/therapist who specializes in late diagnosis for autistic young adults? This is for someone whose quiet...

A diagnosis of Aspergers at this point may actually perpetuate the "masking." That is, "he is anxious because he has Aspergers." VS "he is anxious because he has trouble reading the subtle non verbal cues that come from the people around him. That makes it hard for him to socialize in Highschool" or "He needs time to consider and plan his responses because of some motor planning (or processing) issue and that makes it hard for him to deal with teenagers firing ideas off at such a rapid pace." I'm not discouraging you from helping your friend seek a professional and maybe a diagnosis, but be sure to encourage them to get the practitioner to be SPECIFIC about what is actually happening. The only reason to seek a diagnosis would be to guide proper intervention... However, the only path to proper intervention is to look beyond the diagnosis to the core of this individual's difficulties. Try the autism center at YAI http://www.yai.org/agencies/autism/ Great resource! Also, Psychiatrist Charles Cartwright has a web series on anxiety through this link.

I would highly recommend Dr. Walden in Pawley's Island, SC. It's a 6 month wait to get an appointment. IF she decides to take your case. But her appointments last half a day. And she knows her stuff and how to help quickly.
