On the more exspensive side: Subo, Restaurant Mason and Sprout do a great job. A little cheaper: The Burwood Inn, Junction Hotel or The Albion do food that is way above you're average pub grub. Bocados if they like Spanish or Rustica

Blue Water Pizza. It's not 'romantic', but it's close to the water, the food is good, it's in the CBD, and it's in your price range. You won't get a nice romantic (ie hot date venue) 'neutral' feed in the CBD for $30 pp. Asian food tends to be cheaper but tends not to be romantic venue. Edit: Another option may be Oma's Kitchen in Watt St. Seems pretty unpretentious, and reviews are good. It's German, that's 'neutral' if you like pork, potato and sausages. Never been there myself.

Not sure where you are in the Hunter, but if you're out Maitland-way, there is Momo Wholefood Cafe which have some raw vegan dessert options on their regular menu (unfortunately some contain honey so are not vegan), & they also do raw specials sometimes like pad thai or tacos. They are inside Organic Feast which also stocks lots of raw vegan products like cereals, spreads, crackers, & chocolate. I also know of a vegan naturopath in East Maitland if that's of interest.

The Ireland Bond store (still there) is on the SE corner of King and Perkins streets, opposite DJs carparking station. It’s ground floor was redesigned by Kurt Piccardi in the late 1970 s.
Lindi J. replied:
Not the Bacchus which was the Central Hall. It's an inteesting building in its own right. It was the Newcastle Central City Mission (I forget which religion) when I was a girl, then it was leased by a theatre group and renamed The Mission Theatre (nothing to do with missions, just using the old name). My hubby became involved with the theatre group in the 90 s. When the theatre group dissolved, it became a night club/disco venue for the party goers before becoming Bacchus.

Jim Ireland ran a grocery warehouse in Crown St adjoining the Oxford Hotel that's currently being renovated. Ireland's had a weighbridge out the front in Crown St which was used by the Newcastle Automobile Association to weigh entrants cars in some of the trials they ran from about 1910 until the mid 1920's. This information is from the records of that Association.
