If you like Italian food, go to the North End. If you want pizza - Regina Pizza. Experience the commons and the MFA. It is such a beautiful city.

North End for Italian food (Trattoria il Pannino for pasta and Bova's for pastries. Mike's is always crowded and Bova's is better and friendlier, imo) Definitely the Boston Library Duck tour Top of the Pru for fantastic views and a wonderful narrative of the history of the city Jamaica Plain for a cool, hipster experience. The Sam Adams brewery is there and gives free tours with awesome sized samples! Union Oyster House

Harvard let me in the main library after I proved that I was a dorky academic librarian who visits libraries for fun while on vacation. And after a few days in the city, I enjoyed a little break out to the harbor islands: http://www.bostonharborislands.org/

Take a free tour of the library to learn about the building and its history. Recommend the Freedom Trail, too. Don't miss the duck statues, based on Robert McCloskey's Make Way for Ducklings. Neptune Oyster for the oyster lover. Be prepared to wait, but they give you a beeper so you can walk around!
