Check out different photographers and see if their style is what u like, then ask them for prices. Don't be put off by 'expensive' photographers, especially if their work is amazing! But also don't just get the 'cheap' photographers. check out Rebekah Collins Photography (my business), Holly Foskett Photography, as well as Shoot for the Moon Media.

Look for a photographer with membership of a professional body, that means standard assured. Look for a photographer with a portfolio of family images that you really like. Decide whether you want your portrait to be semi-formal or informal, consid er location eg a studio shoot, possibly with white background, or in a favourite place, then discuss your ideas with several photographers and ask them to price a package based on what you decide you want. Balance price, and what the package contains in terms of number of images, prints etc against the value of working with a photographer you like and with whom you know your family can relax and be themselves, because that is how you will get the images that will make you glad you did all the preparation!
