I can honestly say my beagles were not the small breed beagles. They were mid size. My pups now are small breed dogs. They just turned 12 months and we are getting ready to take them for their check up. We use vetoncall.com since our older boys have passed. I love this vet office. I don't know that I will price shop ever again. We are training them to be apart from each other too. I am still concerned and interested in this topic as a small breed dog owner.

Toledo Blade Animal Clinic. Top Notch services and very affordable.
Valeria T. replied:
I had two labs. they didn't live too long. I miss them every day. They had their teeth cleaned once a year. the little one had to have hers done 2 x because she had some kind of a gum disease. I hated the fact the they were put to sleep. but never had to do any other dental work for either one. I guess it is easier to judge for the doctor how much stuff to give them if the dog is larger. I think dental health for the dogs as important as adults. Some people say, "I never had my dogs teeth cleaned" I say no kidding. !!!!! Kings hwy Charlotte Vet. Dr. Cronin. He was good and reasonable.

I used Dr Groves for my dogs emergency some years ago. I liked him. Last time we went there things had changed and I was not happy with that visit. If we ever need an emergency vet again I will go there again. I am in search of a non emergency vet.

Karyn Massi at Banfield inside Petsmart
Robin V. replied:
The thing that upset me about Dr Groves was that I have a 7 lb dog who had been hurt and on pain meds. I no longer remember the price for the pain med but the pills had to be broken in half for a small dog. One time the pills were not broken and the bottle said half a pill. but the price for the whole pill was the same price for the half pills. I had spent thousands of dollars there I could have broke those pills myself and saved a little money. Now my dog has a lump that I wanted tested with a needle to see if it was bad or just a fat pocket. They would only give me a quote for surgery to remove it for another thousand dollars. I am not made of money.
Robin B. replied:
One time many yrs ago, my daughter Shannon. Came home with a stray puppy found out near Ruff St. No collar or tags, and it had a lump in its throat and was so hungry. We took it to Dr. GROVES and it had to be put down as it was a malignant tumor.Dr. GROVES did not charge me anything to put the pup down and I had alot of respect for him!
Michelle K. replied:
Robin Veverka I had an Emglish Mastiff with a growth on the spine, urinary issues, and a weak (then torn) ACL. ACL surgery was not an option due to cost, size of the dog, post surgery needs and projected outcomes. She could put no weight on it for 6 weeks-- not something I can do with a 200 lbs dog. There was a 90% chance her other ACL would tear, requiring another surgery. My children and I were devastated with the fact that putting her down was the best option. Dr Groves made me feel like I was a horrible person for putting her down. I spent $$$ and had one of 4 surgeries she would need but as more and more issues were discovered and her age we knew we made the right choice. Like I said earlier I know some people will love him-- I am just looking for other places.
Robin V. replied:
I thank God that I had Dr Groves when my dog was attacked. I think he saved his life. He had 4 surgeries to put him back together. He did 4 surgeries on my Yorkie each at about $1000 or better. Each time having me sign the paper saying my dog could die being put under anesthesia. As far as this lump he has he is not bothered by it at all, he is bouncy and happy and I just don't see this as a need for surgery without a biopsy needle. Why risk it if its not needed. The Dr who saw him last at Dr Gove's office about this lump was female, she told me it could be just a fat pocket and handed me an estimate for over $1000 to have it removed. This female Dr also told me my dog had an infected ear at the same visit but I got no antibiotics or any instructions on what to do for this infection just an estimate to remove this lump. After I figured out the pills costing the same for whole or half I started to wonder what else I was taken for.

Dr. Stancil - Animal Medical Clinic of North Port
Robin V. replied:
Animal Medical Clinic had been my vet for years before my dog got attacked and was the first place we went with him. They turned us away and gave us no idea of where to go for help.
Nicole M. replied:
Ok I just took my pup to Heron Creek after reading all the great reviews here for them and since my regular vet is on vacation. Wow, I'm sorry but I didn't see any big difference between them and groves as far as nickel and dime to death!! They may be a great vet as I think Dr Groves is a great vet too but there was no way they were going to get $200 out of me for a wound about the size of a pea on my dogs head. They wanted to run every test under the sun, for what??? The treatment will be the same no matter what the results are?? And I thought $46 for office visit was a bit steep as well. Then they charged me $30 for a spray I can get on amazon for $12. Why can't North Port just get both a good and REASONABLE vet? I'll continue to drive to Venice until then.

Aaron M. replied:
Dr Callum Hay is the best orthopedic vet but he's in Tampa. I will travel as far as I need for the right vet. We have working dogs and I wouldn't let anyone else operate on one of mine if it's ortho related. http://www.vetsurgical.net But what are you needing? My vet does chiropractic adjustments, etc.
