FYI If you own a car, you know how important it is to keep up with routine maintenance and repairs. But can a dealer refuse to honor the warranty that came with your new car if someone else does the routine maintenance or repairs? The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, says no. In fact, it's illegal for a dealer to deny your warranty coverage simply because you had routine maintenance or repairs performed by someone else. Routine maintenance often includes oil changes, tire rotations, belt replacement, fluid checks and flushes, new brake pads, and inspections. Maintenance schedules vary by vehicle make, model and year; the best source of information about routine scheduled maintenance is your owner's manual.
Kraig There is a lot that can be read in between the lines of the FTC notice I was at the Toyota dealership yesterday dealing with a potentially very gray area that got resolved in my favor because I have previously had my car serviced by them
Kraig H. replied:
Moses there is no grey area... I been in the automotive business for over 30 years. The dealer or the factory can not void your warranty for doing your own repairs or having a independent shop do them for you. For example if the dealer or independent shop changed your oil and forgot to tighten the drain plug and you lost oil pressure and burned up your motor the dealer can't perform a warranty repair because they screwed up but that does not "void" your cars warranty either for any other problems the car may have. But in this case the shop that replaced the oil needs to do the repair free of charge. If the Toyota dealer was dealing with a "grey area" they need to prove that someone screwed up. If they screwed up that would be dishonest for them to write a warranty claim and bill Toyota Motor Co.

I highly recommend Les Hinks Automotive on Oak Street in beautiful downtown Ojai, Maiya Roseff. He and his wife, Missy Hinks, do all the work on the cars. I especially liked talking to a woman about what my car needed, and she really knows her stuff. Give them a try 646-6407

Sadly, I did not have a good experience with my relatively new Prius a couple of months ago at Ojai Imports/Foreign Auto...so bad that they gave me a total refund for the shoddy work, which took multiple visits with no positive result. It was pretty horrendous and inexcusable. I left feeling like the owners were no longer invested in keeping their business up much less managing their staff.

I have always had good work and good care from the folks at Ojai Imports. I think it speaks to their integrity that they gave you a total refund, although I 'm very sorry to hear that it took so much effort on your part with no positive results. I get ...See More
Can anyone recommend a good place in town to go get an oil change for the car?
Olivia G. replied:
i would strongly NOT recommend Freds, first and last time I went there, they forgot to put the oil back in my car. I was driving it the day after and it made a horrible shutter and noise, i pulled into the nearest gas station and it was completely dry. when i called to complain, they told me I'd need to prove that I had emptied it myself?! what?! why would anyone do that? I usually always go to MO auto repair on El Roblar and La Luna
