The 1020 isn't a phone, its a camera that happens to also work as a phone, whereas with other phones its the other way around. Your friend is right though, update 8.1 *may* sort out some things, but for your major apps I'm not sure they will ever get there because of the completion. Google has already stated that they will never come out with Google Maps for Windows Phone, and the two companies have already squabbled over the YouTube app that is on WP as its a Microsoft app and not Google's. Like I said, I will probably switch back to Android in another year. I like to try and at least get a year, year and a half out of my phones.
