Will my web designer/graphic designer friends message me with their experience in this field? School process, what you like, what you don't, etc... I'm looking in going...
Devin H. replied:
Casey, I didn't study for this in college, but rather built up into it by a series of twists and turns in my professional career. I started as an HTML coder, became an expert in pixel-perfect translation of design to web, then moved into making more influential decisions about the right ways to design web software, and eventually made the switch fully out of coding to the design side. Now I'm a UX designer and manager, overseeing a team of five designers and UX programmers. It's been a great road, but I never would have guessed this is where I would be, since I never was much of an "artist." I can tell you that the demand for UX designers in the web and software world is incredibly high right now. Graphic design is a part of that, but I specialize in interaction design and usability. That's part artistry, but mostly psychology. I spend my life largely doing creative problem solving, looking for ways to make complex processes easier for people to understand and accomplish. It pays well, it's rewarding work for my creative side, and I'm well regarded in my company and in demand in my field. You have to have a thick skin, not be sensitive to criticism, and accept that everybody thinks they know how to do your job sometimes. It's very collaborative, there's a lot of research and teamwork involved, and you have to be able to give up a good idea for one that's easier for a programmer to build sometimes. All in all, if you have a knack for it, it's a good field to be in. I would recommend along with learning the design side, familiarize yourself with the technology/programming side. HTML/CSS/Javascript, especially. That's what sets me apart and makes me valuable. Happy to talk more if you're interested. Good luck!
