Just a dude looking for a spot to get a haircut where they can give me pro advice on what hair suits me. I've been to a few spots over the years (House of Barons,...

I had the same issue. I'm balding, so I wanted to minimize how noticeable my thinning areas were. Every time I asked, it was always the same answer. I went to Hair Fellas on Slater. They gave me Sonia, and she knows her stuff. We talked for a good half hour about my options. I say go to her.

I was looking for the same sort of thing for a while, walked into Khalil Barber since it happened to be close to where I was at the time and one of the barbers (whose name I've been trying to remember ever since but keep guessing wrong and getting different guys, all of whom are pretty great mind you) did exactly what you described. In his words, "you know I'm the expert, I know I'm the expert, this is exactly what I like." $20 a cut, 5.0 Google review rating with a pretty big sample size, if you can tolerate slightly loud Persian music videos for half an hour I highly recommend it. Sorry I can't recommend the particular barber but if you call I'd imagine they'll set you up with the right guy for it.

See Julian at Julian.Marc - very skilled at doling out style.

Fadz International on Somerset was very good to my head, even as a pasty white guy. You do have to have a bit of an idea of what you want though. A hair stylist/barber is a lot like a cook, they don't know what you'll like, but they can make suggestions.

Josh at Not Your Father's Barber -- really down to Earth type with a variety of hair-cutting experience. I asked him if he'd cut my type of hair before, and he told me a few styles he'd done on similar types. Checked out, been happy each and every time I go back. Plus, the free coffee and TV's are also great perks.

I've been going to [The Connoiseur](https://www.google.ca/maps/place/The+Connoisseur+Art+and+Hair+Studio/@45.4186172,-75.6927331,17 z/data=!3 m1!4 b1!4 m5!3 m4!1 s0 x4 cce05 a96 fcf97 f3:0 xe12 fbff9 db35 f2 c1!8 m2!3 d45.4186172!4 d-75.6905444?hl=en) at Cooper and Elgin for a while now, at the recommendation of a friend. Gamal knows what he's doing and remembers everyone. Good rates, great service.

You need to go see a few people at Rinaldo's on George Street. Fiorella is great with men's hair. So is Cait and Simon is as well.... they will all be able to give you straight up honest help. Fiorella is one of the owners so she might be the best person to start with.

They're right - they don't know you. They don't know what haircut you'd like and what you wouldn't. Go to the same stylist a few times and take a few pictures you want to try and tell them what you liked and what you didn't and then they can start giving you personal recommendations.

I've been around, and the best first impression I had was with [Khalil's Barbershop](http://www.khalilbarbershop.com/). 167 and counting 5 star reviews. They treat you well, and have a diverse enough clientele that they can make the right choice for you.

Dave at Warren Chase Rideau. I just sit in the chair and chat shit about soccer without giving him any instructions.

Donna's cool red room on Kent. Donna is very knowledgable and easy to chat with. For reference, i am a male with super-fine hair. It took me years to find someone that knows how to cut this properly. It's not cheap like super cuts or whatever, but it is a sound investment to not look like a knob... Also she's been my wife's stylist for years.

Have you considered getting to know your barber? They're right, it is hard to recommend a hairstyle for somebody they don't know. I've been going to the same hairdresser for 3 years, she knows what I like and gives me very good advice. Find a barber you like and stick with him, you're not going to find somebody who can give you good advice on the first time.
Anyone know where I can find an old fashioned barber, not the assembly line type?
Colin G. replied:
When I need my features chiseled I head down to The Brooke in Hintonburg. It might not be local but it's inexpensive, the barbers are excellent, there's rarely a wait, and most importantly, they know what to do with a beard. http://www.thebrooke.ca/
John H. replied:
I highly recommend http://www.moesbarbershop.ca/ in Carleton Place. Cash only ($20 + tip). But be prepared to wait up to 3+ hours -- however, you can 'take a number' and go for lunch.
