Natural Herbal Anti-Anxiety Supplement Suggestions? New to the world of herbal remedies, my therapist asked me to look into an herbal anti-anxiety supplement, trying to...
silverkel replied:
valerian root and kava kava are my go-tos :) I have never tried monotropa uniflora (ghost pipe) but I have heard and read that it can work well for this. I'm from Canada, and I get my kava kava from a supplier based out of Nelson BC - Blue Lotus herbals. Wonderful man who makes those medicines.
MrsB6 replied:
Try kava from either Vitacost or iHerb - brands like Giaia and HerbPharm are the most reliable - but important if taking Kava to NOT use if under the influence of caffeine, alcohol or other drugs. It is one of the best for anxiety, but I would also also recommend GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid) supplementation (sorry not a herb, but really helps), also available at those outlets. Also consider WHY you are suffering from anxiety as counselling and/or Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) might also need to be considered.
Jo_Jo_ replied:
I would recommend looking into valeriana, st. John’s wort and withania somnifera (Ashwagandha). Valeriana is a mild sedative and helps with insomnia, st. John’s Wort helps with depression and withania is good for anxiety. Please check the human effect matrix and research in the links below: https://examine.com/supplements/ashwagandha/ https://examine.com/supplements/valeriana-officinalis/ https://examine.com/supplements/hypericum-perforatum/ Edit: I can’t recommend specific suppliers or products though. Maybe someone else will be able to. I make my own tinctures and buy my herbs in Europe where I live.
thedeathlessrealm replied:
It is often best to start with the fresh, not dried material, tinctures. Like American skullcap and milky oat seed is a good combination for the nerves. There is also ashwagandha and St. John's wort. Ashwagandha is made from a dried root whilst St. John's wort is best from fresh flowers and the liquid has a deep red colour. Suppliers in the US which know their stuff about herbs are: Herb Pharm and Mountain Rose Herbs. I usually avoid standardised extracts and various powders from nootropics websites or amazon personally. I would also dare to say Examine isn't the best source of information about herbs; try a text book by Matthew Wood, David Winston, David Hoffman, or Rosemary Gladstar.

kidneys & adrenals are taxedddd man
I'd do some 2-3 day fasts and fruit diet and see if you can get mucus out in your urine
herbs I'd look at lots of sarsaparilla root (berries if you can get them). brilliant herb for rebuilding the adrenals. I'd use it alongside burdock root & elderberry in herbal teas. then add yellow dock root & chaparral leaf but in small amounts first just to get a feel of what you're in for, strong bitters but they'll detoxify you good.
the more herbs you use the better till you're clean and everything's regenerated. herbs like valerian are excellent for strengthening the nervous system, and it will help ease your anxiety when you experience it, but know the *cause* of anxiety ties back to the kidneys and adrenal glands, not the brain and nervous system. so that's the system of the body you want to be locked onto in the long-run, to get this out of you.

are not anxiolytic herbal compounds psychotropic by definition? anyway, i have great success with lemon balm, ashwagandha, and lavender. nootropicsdepot is an excellent vendor; they carry both ashwagandha and lemon balm extracts. lavender oil can be found on amazon, i've used just the CalmAid brand and it works well
YourGirlAsha replied:
I burn bay leaves in my room at night (bought from the supermarket or taken from a tree and dried). The smoke is proven to relax you :) Also CBD oil - it contains trace amounts of THC so won't make you high, just calm. I'm in the UK and I use https://www.hempen.co.uk/ Check out this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A86PDOJuGNw&t=644 s And invest in some Sleepy as a nighttime lotion from LUSH cus it's delicious and soothing as FUCK
jjkathy replied:
Golden paste (turmeric paste with olive oil and black pepper) cures my anxiety pretty much completely and I've been struggling with it ever since I was a child so to me it's a huge thing. I take a teaspoon twice a day, morning and evening. I want to preach it to everyone who struggles with anxiety, but not many people treat natural remedies seriously. I'd highly recommend to try. Previously I had really good results with St John's Wort but unfortunately the migraines it gave me in the summer were too much to handle.

kratom, kava

I've found that turmeric significantly lowers anxiety when I add it in my tea. Frankincense & orange oil work pretty good as well.

I don't know any viniyoga therapists, but I do know Anita Lewis is a yoga therapy practitioner in Oxford. She used to be a nurse and is well-respected, though I've never had a session with her. Hope that helps some!
